Filmmaker, Kiran Rao was previously married to actor, Aamir Khan, but the duo parted ways on an amicable note. The gorgeous diva is currently at the Toronto International Film Festival, as her second feature film, Laapataa Ladies, premiered over there. For the unversed, Kiran made her directorial debut with Dhobi Ghat in 2011. She has also produced many films, including Delhi Belly, Secret Superstar, Dangal, and Laal Singh Chaddha.
In an interview with Film Companion, Kiran Rao opened up about the success of her film and revealed that it wouldn’t have been possible without her ex-husband, Aamir Khan. Talking about the same, she shared that Aamir is also the film’s producer, and it was him, who discovered the script. Calling him a great support, Kiran said:
“He’s been such a great support. We wouldn’t have this film without it, because he found the script, and he offered it to me to direct, which was incredibly fortuitous for me.”
In the same interview, Kiran Rao was asked what it was like to make a movie about marriage while marital bliss with Aamir Khan was ending. To this, Kiran said that she never had trauma after her divorce from Aamir and shared that she has had very loving relationships in her life, and continues to have them. She further added:
“A lot of the issues we’ve tackled (in the film), in some way, we’ve all experienced. I’ve been very fortunate because all my relationships have never had trauma. I’ve had very loving relationships in my life, and continue to have them. The idea was to show how, within the constructs of marriage, within socially-normative relationships, you can still find your freedom, you can still find who you are, and you can reach for something that fulfils your potential, and I’ve experienced that myself.”
Kiran Rao added that she has a wonderful relationship with her ex-husband, Aamir Khan, and shared that she found support from his family after their divorce. She also revealed that society and relationships are very important to both her and Aamir and said:
“I continue to have a wonderful relationship with my producer and ex-husband. I continue to be supported by both my family and Aamir’s, so I feel that it’s all possible, and this film wants to convey that, and not make you throw out the baby with the bathwater. Society and relationships are very important to both… to all of us.”
Aamir Khan and his first wife, Reena Dutta went separate ways after 16 years of married life and were granted divorce in 2002. After his divorce from Reena, Aamir found love in director-producer, Kiran Rao, and they tied the knot in December 2005. Aamir and Kiran embraced parenthood with the arrival of their son, Azad Rao Khan via IVF. However, in 2021, Aamir and Kiran announced their divorce, ending 15-and-a-half years of marriage. The duo still share a cordial bond with each other, which is praiseworthy.
What are your views about Kiran Rao's revelations?
Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta's love story was nothing short of a filmy Bollywood story, as the ex-couple was neighbours and would often gape at each other through their windows. That is why the song, Mere Saamne Wali Khidki Mein, from the film, Padosan (1968), perfectly sums up how theRead More
