Kim Kardashian had some high-profile relationships, including with former NBA player Kris Humphries. The duo began dating in 2010 and got married in 2011. However, the marriage ended in just 72 days. And their highly-publicised legal battle dragged on for a year before they officially got separated. What led to the couple’s divorce? Let’s find out.

Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries’ whirlwind romance and marriage

In 2010, Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries were introduced by his teammate, Jordan Farmer, in New York. Soon, the duo began dating and were seen together at many events together. In 2011, Kris proposed to Kim at her home. He placed rose petals on the floor of her bedroom, which spelled out, ‘Will you marry me?'

In an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kris revealed that he wanted a quiet place without any distractions, which is why he chose Kim’s bedroom for the proposal. After their engagement news broke, there were rumors that Kim was pregnant, which she denied. In 2011, the couple tied the knot in the Montecito enclave of California in the presence of their famous friends and family.

The wedding ceremony was filmed for the four-hour E! special Kim’s Fairytale Wedding and was aired in October 2011. The duo appeared together on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and jokingly discussed renewing their vows just five weeks after the wedding.

Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries’ divorce after 72 days and an ugly legal battle

Kardashian filed for divorce from Humphries on October 31, 2011, after 72 days of marriage. The reason she cited was ‘irreconcilable differences’. Kim, in her divorce filing, stated that neither party is to be awarded spousal support. Talking about her divorce, Kim told Us Weekly:

“I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don’t work out as planned. We remain friends and wish each other the best.”

On the other hand, Kris revealed in a statement that he was not ready to divorce Kim as he wasn’t done fighting for his relationship. The former NBA star also stated that he was devastated to know that about the divorce and was willing o do whatever it takes to make it work. He also revealed that he was committed to the marriage.

In November 2011, Kris filed for an annulment of their marriage, revealing that prior to their wedding, the couple had signed a prenuptial agreement that guaranteed she would keep any money she earned during their union. Soon, people started calling out the couple for faking their marriage for TRP. But Kris defended himself and said that for him ‘it was real’.

In April 2013, the couple reached a settlement after Humphries dropped his annulment request, and their divorce was finalized in June 2013. Years later, Kim reflected on her marriage with Kris as she appeared on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen and revealed that on her honeymoon itself, she knew that their marriage won’t work out.

In 2019, Kris retired from the NBA and recalled his famous split from Kim. Kris stated that he was in a dark place for a year after the wedding and it took him some time to get over it. In a blog post for The Players' Tribune, Kris penned his emotions on his divorce and wrote:

“I should have known what I was getting into. I was definitely naïve about how much my life was going to change. But the one thing that really bothers me is whenever people say that my marriage was fake. Our actual relationship was 100 percent real. It’s never easy to go through the embarrassment of something like that — with your friends, with your family…. But when it plays out so publicly, in front of the world, it’s a whole other level. It was brutal.”
