Although this information was made public recently, Suri reportedly has been using the surname 'Noelle' publicly for several years. Back in 2024, Suri appeared as 'Suri Noelle' in her LaGuardia High School graduation program. Suri and her dad, Tom Cruise, maintained zero public contact, and reportedly, they have been totally estranged over the course of a decade. The father-daughter duo was last publicly seen back in 2012. Reports have claimed that Tom Cruise isn't actively involved in his daughter's life, while the financial help for her continues. Now, coming to Katie Holmes' feelings over Suri's choice, sources revealed to Page Six that the incident didn't take her by surprise, as she knows her daughter well.
Katie is well aware of her daughter being independent and confident about making her own decision. Suri's decision didn't happen overnight; it evolved over time. Katie was not the one who had in any way encouraged or pushed her daughter to cut ties with her estranged dad by dropping his surname and it was completely her own decision to do so. According to the source:
"Katie wasn’t surprised by Suri’s decision to legally drop ‘Cruise’ from her last name because that’s just who Suri is. She’s always been incredibly independent and confident in making her own choices. This also wasn’t something that happened overnight. It was a decision that evolved over time, and Katie respected Suri’s process every step of the way. This wasn’t something Katie pushed or encouraged. It was entirely Suri’s decision."
Choosing to drop her father's surname is a child's own decision, and Katie believes that it was completely up to her daughter about what she wanted to do. Sharing that Katie is actually proud of how her daughter is an independent individual who can make her own decisions, the source said:

She’s an adult now, and Katie has always believed those kinds of personal decisions are hers to make. More than anything, Katie just wants Suri to be happy and live life on her own terms."
