Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan are one of the closest buddies of Tinseltown. While the duo have come together for a plethora of films, their friendship and bonding supersedes way beyond the professional commitments. SRK and Karan are more like the epitome of friends becoming family, and time and again, they have shared various anecdotes from their decades-long companionship. And something similar happened yet again.
During his conversation with Nikhil Taneja in his show, Be A Man, Yaar! Karan Johar opened up about certain unheard anecdotes from his friendship and bonding with Shah Rukh Khan. The filmmaker mentioned how the actor has a special place in his life and heart, since the latter was the first one to embrace him despite differences. Sharing more on it, Karan recalled how he was able to come out and speak fearlessly about his feminine personality with the actor, who embraced it without any hesitations or pre-conceived biases. In his words:
“I felt that the feminine side that I had that was coming out so strongly was only met with laughter or being made fun of. Then when I grew older, people got a little quieter about it, but I could tell that there was a chitter-chatter around maybe the way I walked, or spoke or things. I remember Shah Rukh Khan was the first man that did not make me feel any less. I feel like he accepted what in those days was considered being a pansy, or being effeminate or walking funny and he was just so cool about it, about everything.”

Sharing more about it, Karan Johar then went on to add how SRK was more open and embracing than even his parents, when it came to the matter of his sexuality. He credited the actor’s upbringing with a very progressive mentality and highlighted:
“I think the first person that made me feel that I was okay was Shah Rukh Khan. He was born and brought up in a very progressive environment. He had come from theatre, he had worked with all kinds of people, and I think my parents were not being able to understand things."
Concluding the statement, Karan Johar added how after he opened up about his sexuality to the actor, the duo started to have more open, candid conversations with one another, where the actor wouldn’t make fun of him and instead understood his point of view. Sharing how SRK always gave him a sense of support, Karan mentioned:
“He used to have a lot of open chats with me, and I felt like even when I had to say the biggest thing about my personality and sexuality, I spoke to him first. I felt like he would be that one influence or that one sense of support that even he hasn’t realised that he has been to me. So yes, it was first Shah Rukh and it still remains Shah Rukh.”

In an earlier interview with Mid-Day, Karan Johar had opened up about the kind of bonding he shared with Shah Rukh Khan, and recalled a special anecdote, which kind of sealed it to be permanent and forever. The filmmaker reminisced how, during the shooting of the film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, he was threatened by an underworld don to stall the release of the film. Karan then mentioned how SRK simply stood brave and even vouched to take a bullet for the sake of their friendship, but didn’t let the film release get stalled.
