Plotline of Kara

Kara revolves around 'Karaswamy' (played by Dhanush), a grey-shaded man who lives in the shadows of Ramanathapuram. As the global fuel crisis strikes hard in India, the local economy collapses, leading to black market wars. Amid this, 'Karaswamy' returns to his village and becomes the pillar of strength for the common people who feel vulnerable due to the fuel shortage. 'Karaswamy' uses his knowledge about local terrain and also advanced military-grade heist tactics to hijack fuel trucks intended for the corrupt elite.

In the film, Kara, Dhanush as 'Karaswamy', is presented as a grey-shaded character. He hijacks the fuel tracks with his friend, 'Kandhasaami,' (played by K.S. Ravikumar). However, their close alliance turns sour when 'Karaswamy' learns about 'Kandhasaami's' betrayal. 'Karaswamy' catches 'Kandhasaami' red-handed when the latter sells the stolen fuel to the same corrupt elite.

This betrayal leads 'Karaswamy' to fight a two-front war, involving 'DSP Bharathan' (played by Suraj Venjaramoodu), who wants to arrest him and the local syndicate that includes 'Kandhasaami.' Final heist to cost 'Karaswamy' his life? (Spoiler alert)

The last part of the film focuses on a crucial 16-day countdown. During this timeline, 'Karaswamy' realises that this is the only time to wash his 'stain' from his name. He launches a suicide mission to seize a massive state-held fuel reserve. If 'Karaswamy' succeeds in this dangerous mission, his villagers will be rescued from the fuel crisis. The heist is methodically planned by 'Karaswamy' by using the old 90s style methods of sabotage. This deadly mission cost him as he lost his closest ally, 'Murugesan' (played by Prithvi Rajan). This loss makes 'Karaswamy' both angry and emotional. His rage becomes very intense and thus he loses his humanity and self-control. In the last moment, 'DSP Bharathan' lets 'Karaswamy' slip away at night. 

By the time, 'Bharathan' realises that although 'Karaswamy' is a criminal on paper, he has a true and genuine intention to save his people. After facing the hurdles, 'Karaswamy succeeds in his mission. However, he cannot return home because he is still wanted by the law and he has to pay for his past actions. The stain is not because of his guilt, but it is the burden of someone else's actions. The film ends with 'Karaswamy' looking at a blurry photograph of a man in the Middle East.

Is Kara 2 happening?

As of now, the official announcement of Kara 2 happening is yet to be revealed. However, the open ending and the blurry photograph are hinting at an expansion of the Kara world. If Kara happens, it might showcase 'Karaswamy's' early life that has a secret link with the Middle East.
