It was in 1992 when Tanuja Samarth and Shomu Mukherjee’s daughter, Kajol made her debut in the film industry and in no time, became everyone’s favourite for being a fresh breath of air at the time when the nation was fascinated with fair skin and perfect features divas. With her dusky complexion, the ever-so-famous unibrow, vivacious nature and versatility in acting, Kajol is a magic that happened to this industry two decades ago. A year before i.e., in 1991, Veeru Devgan and Veena’s son and the ultimate action hero of Bollywood, Ajay Devgn made his seeti-maaro worth entry performing a split between two motorcycles in his debut film, Phool Aur Kaante. And over the years, Ajay has managed to make action synonymous to his name, who has also given some phenomenal performances in other genres of films, be it comedy, romance or drama. The unconventional beauty of Bollywood met the rational movie star on the sets of Hulchul and it was all fate which had brought them together. But it was their next film, Gundaraj which brought them closer and without any formal proposal, Kajol and Ajay became ‘U, Me Aur Hum’ on February 24, 1999.
More than a decade later, Kajol and Ajay Devgan have reunited for a project and will be seen on the silver screens, spreading their magic together. In an interview with the Mid-Day, Kajol recalled how she used to joke initially that Ajay wants to cast her in Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior so that he wouldn’t have to pay her fees. Kajol shared, "A week [after he read the script], he told me, 'I want you to play Savitribai Malusare. If you say yes, I will develop it [the role] further. If you are not doing it, I will leave it at that'. Initially, I joked that he wanted me to be part of the film so that he didn't have to pay my fees." A round of narration later, Kajol found herself taken by the strong-headed character.
When asked why it took her 11 years to reunite with hubby, Ajay Devgn on-screen, Kajol retorted, "We have completely different points of view. It is rare for both of us to like something. We can't do a regular love story where our characters are shown to be meeting each other for the first time. Our off-screen relationship is deeply seeped into the audience's minds, so they will not believe it. From marriage dramas to dancing around trees, we have explored everything on screen." Revealing how she stayed true to the universe of the 17th century period drama, Kajol stated, "I was excited about wearing a nauvari saree for the first time on screen. It was the second time I was wearing one after my wedding [in 1999]. But the nauvari saree is difficult to drape and I wasn't sure if I would be able to perfect the body language. Thankfully, I had seen my grandmother [Shobhana Samarth], my relatives, and even my [domestic] help wear it. So, I had an idea about how to carry the saree."
A few months back, Kajol interacted with her fans in an Instagram ‘Ask Me Anything’ session and out of the zillion questions that she had answered, there was a burning question that everybody wanted to know “Would you marry SRK if you didn’t meet Ajay?” To this, a super-witty Kajol had replied, “Isn’t the man supposed to be proposing?” Kajol had further went on to reveal her preference as an actor between hubby, Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan. Kajol had stated, “Depends on the situation.”
Kajol is famous for her chirpy attitude and boisterous laugh. In an interview with Pinkvilla, Kajol had revealed the reason behind her successful marriage. It is a cue which many men should learn from, which is, one should listen while the other speaks (the former is generally indicated for the men outta here!) Sharing the same, Kajol was quoted as saying, “I think our relationship has worked only because I speak a lot and he quietly listens. So the secret to our happy married life is that Ajay doesn't say much.
