Why did Julie Bowen split from her ex-husband, Scott Phillips?
Before Julie Bowen became a household name with her stint as 'Claire Dunphy' on Modern Family, Julie was already married. She tied the knot with Scott Phillips in 2004. In fact, he is a real estate investor and a software developer, who spent more than a decade with Julie before they went different ways.
Despite Julie's popularity, Scott has mostly stayed away from the Hollywood spotlight to live a more private life. Rather, the pair built a simple life with their three sons, Oliver, 19 and 17-year-old twins, Gustave and John. After more than a decade of their marriage, Julie and Scott separated in 2017. Later, the actress filed for a divorce in February 2018, which was finalized towards the end of the year.
According to the court documents, Julie mentioned "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for their divorce. Although neither she nor Scott shared the specifics about what caused the end of their marriage, some reports suggested that they had simply grown apart and lived separate lives.

After nearly eight years of her separation from Scott, Julie confirmed that she is dating someone new. She recently spoke at Step Up's 2026 Annual Inspiration Awards in Los Angeles and described that her new partner is a "lovely friend" and revealed that he is both "smart and funny". However, Julie decided not to reveal his identity. She admitted that he is good-looking despite acknowledging that personality matters more than appearance. In her words:
"I need smart and funny. Those are the two [characteristics I look for in a partner]. I don't care what people look like though he happens to be good-looking. But I don't care what people look like. I like the brains."
