Juhi Chawla was undoubtedly one of the most-loved faces in Bollywood in the early 90s, and she mesmerised her fans with some of the most iconic films like Darr, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, Ishq among others. Juhi had romanced every big star in Bollywood and had charted a bright career when she decided to settle down in matrimony with her businessman husband, Jay Mehta in 1995. However, despite being a popular and highly successful actress, she had chosen to keep her wedding a secret for the longest time. And once, quite later in her life, she had spoken about this unusual decision regarding her personal life.
In an interview with Rajeev Masand, Juhi Chawla had once recalled the reason behind her decision to keep her wedding with Jay Mehta hidden from the rest of the world for a considerable time. Juhi mentioned that since back then she was at the peak of her career, and had just settled down successfully in her career when she tied the knot. However, she had apprehensions that letting the world know about her marriage might have an adverse impact on her gradually built career, so she decided to keep it a secret. In her words:
“At that time, you did not have the internet and you did not have cameras on every phone, so you could do it that way. I was just about established and doing well. That’s the time Jay was serenading me and I was afraid of losing my career just when I had kind of got there. I wanted to carry on and this seemed the midway.”

Juhi Chawla and Jay Mehta found soulmates in one another as they grew closer with their shared past of grief. For the unversed, they met at a time when Jay had just lost his first wife, Sujata Birla in a plane crash, and on the other hand, Juhi, too had lost her mother in a car crash. The duo went on to become quite close and their years of dating were quite special in every aspect. Speaking about the same, in one of her interviews, Juhi had recounted how Jay would often send her gifts, flowers and notes, and once even sent her a truckload of roses, which left her perplexed. She mentioned:
“Everywhere I looked, he was there with flowers and notes and gifts. Every day! On my birthday, I remember he sent me a truckload of red roses. I was like, ‘What do you do with a truckload of flowers?’ He really did all he could. After a year, he proposed.”
Juhi Chawla was very close to her mother, Mona Chawla, and certainly, the news of her passing came as a big shocker for her. For the unversed, Juhi learnt the tragic news while she was shooting for her 1998 film, Duplicate. The incident left a deep impact on her life, and it was her beau, Jay, who stood beside her like a strong pillar. In one of her earlier interviews, Juhi recalled that painful period of her life and mentioned how she started to fear that she would end up losing everything she loved. In her words:
“That was a very difficult time for me, because I felt I was going to lose everything I loved.”

With so many years of their marriage, Juhi and Jay’s unconditional love for one another has been the constant factor all throughout. While they might not be a PDA couple, their deep love and respect for one another speak volumes nevertheless. For instance, during her appearance on the chat show, Koffee With Karan, Juhi had taken pride in marrying Jay than any other Bollywood celeb or handsome actor and gave a very witty answer for the same. She revealed that she would not want her filmy husband to competing her in checking his looks every time in the mirror, much like her.
