Melissa Womer revealed the real reason behind their split
Jim Carrey was a nobody when he met Melissa Womer. He was a stand-up comedian, and Melissa worked as a cocktail waitress at the Comedy Store. They fell in love, dated for two years, and married in 1987. Throughout their marriage, Melissa supported Carrey. When they got married, Melissa was pregnant with their child and held two jobs to support him. She worked as a waitress and masseuse in L.A. to pay the bills, while he made USD 25 a night.
Melissa believed in him, and his destiny changed when he was approached about a new sketch show, In Living Color. Audiences loved Carrey’s goofiness, and he began to receive the recognition he was seeking. In 1994, Carrey appeared in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber, which changed his career and made him one of the top stars. However, the superstardom changed him forever. He went from no money to big money, fast cars, and a lavish lifestyle.
His newfound fame made him arrogant and turned his head into the clouds. Fame changed him; as a result, he wanted to enjoy success as a single man. He flew to shoot for Ace Ventura and never came back. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Melissa spoke about their split and said that, just before he left to do Ace Ventura, he celebrated their sixth anniversary in the most romantic way.
Meanwhile, Jim was carrying on a very public affair with Lauren Holly, his co-star in Dumb and Dumber, who later became his second wife. Addressing the rumors of Carrey’s affair, Melissa shared:
“You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out what happened. I personally think she may have been involved a lot sooner than they are letting on.”
Melissa Womer said Jim Carrey tried to fake the date of their separation
Carrey filed for divorce from Womer in November 1994. However, in her interview, Melissa claimed that Jim tried to fake the date of their separation to keep her and their daughter from sharing the money he earned from The Mask. According to Rolling Stone, Womer claims she and Jim separated in November 1993, while Jim claims they parted ways on June 15, 1993. She maintains that they didn’t break up until he called her in October to say he wasn’t coming home.
Jim reportedly signed a USD 450,000 contract for The Mask on June 15, and California's divorce laws stated that he would split the money with Womer if they were still together on the date the contract was signed. After a long battle, the couple settled their divorce in private. Speaking about their ugly split, Melissa said:
“It’s Chinese water torture. I still hurt bad - I still have moments when I lock myself in my room. In the beginning I yelled and screamed when he refused to work on the marriage. I acted like a jerk. I should just have let go. He’s not good husband material. Marriage takes empathy, commitment, and sacrifice. The dude has changed.”
