Christa Gail Pike, Tennessee's first woman on death row in over 200 years, is not that easy to kill. The 50-year-old inmate's long-delayed execution turned unexpectedly chaotic after Tennessee officials were unable to complete the scheduled lethal injection on Wednesday night, September 30, 2026.

Pike was scheduled to be executed at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. The execution had already been delayed for hours after a last-minute court battle before the U.S. Supreme Court ultimately cleared the way for Tennessee to proceed.

What happened during the execution that led to Christa Pike's emergency hospitalization?

According to The Tennesseean, Pike's execution began at the Tennessee Department of Correction at approximately 8:48 p.m. CT, and officials appeared to administer two doses of pentobarbital. Witnesses at the death chamber then reported hearing the 50-year-old snoring loudly behind the curtain, while emergency vehicles were seen arriving at and leaving the prison.

Pike was reportedly still alive and awake even over 40 minutes after the last dose. Her attorneys filed emergency motions seeking to halt the execution and demanded that lifesaving medical measures begin. Her lawyer's motion, as obtained by USA TODAY, reads:

"At 8:26 p.m., execution witnesses reported that the executioners had injected both syringes of lethal injection chemicals and Pike is still alive and snoring. This execution is causing Ms. Pike unnecessary agony and occurring in violation of his right to be executed free of cruel and unusual punishment."

The attorneys noted that the prolonged nature of the execution process is "causing Ms. Pike to suffer superadded physical and mental suffering," urging that the Department of Correction "immediately begin lifesaving measures."

The Associated Press reported that prison officials briefly closed the curtain around 7:46 p.m., during which the media witnesses were separated from the execution chamber. When it reopened minutes later, Pike could reportedly be heard snoring loudly. The curtain was closed again at 8:06 p.m., with witnesses continuing to hear snoring until the microphone was cut off around 8:53 p.m.

U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for Christa Pike's execution after a brief halt

The execution process began after a dramatic series of legal developments throughout the day. Pike had initially been scheduled to receive the lethal injection at 10 a.m. CT. But roughly an hour before the scheduled execution, a federal appeals court issued a temporary stay, putting the execution on hold.

Tennessee officials quickly asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the stay. In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court granted the state’s request. Justice Brett Kavanaugh signed the order vacating the stay, allowing Tennessee to move forward with the execution before midnight on the scheduled day, i.e., September 30, 2026.

Pike's legal team has spent recent months arguing that her history of sexual abuse and trauma deserved greater consideration. Court filings say she had a deeply traumatic past, having faced severe sexual abuse and violence throughout her childhood. She was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Pike's attorneys have repeatedly argued that evidence of her traumatic upbringing was not adequately presented to the jury that sentenced her to death in 1996. The legal team noted that the state had disputed her claims of childhood sexual abuse but more recently acknowledged that she had, in fact, suffered abuse.

On September 28, 2026, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee rejected Pike's request for clemency, and the Supreme Court also later declined her attorneys' request to take up another appeal. The state has argued that Pike’s history of childhood trauma does not absolve her of responsibility for the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, whose body was found abandoned after she was brutally attacked by Pike and her accomplices, suffering more than 300 cuts and severe injuries to her skull.

Pike was 18 when she and her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, were convicted in connection with Slemmer’s killing. Pike received a death sentence, while Shipp, who was 17 at the time, received a life sentence with the possibility of parole.

Currently, Pike is hospitalized and reportedly in critical condition, and it remains to be seen what happens to her execution.
