Her debut album, On the 6, became a breakthrough for her and earned her a Grammy nomination. Not just as a singer, but JLO proved her acting chops with movies like Anaconda, Out of Sight, The Wedding Planner, Maid In Manhattan and many more. It was the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards in 2000 when Jennifer Lopez shut down the red carpet with her plunging-neckline Versace dress. Her provocative printed long-sleeve gown had a down-to-there neckline and up-to-there slit. The barely-there look featured a tropical leaf and bamboo pattern, which appeared diaphanous due to the sheer quality of its silk chiffon material. Atop it was a dazzling Citrine brooch that held the dress in place. The brooch was positioned below the navel and above the dress’s daring leg slit.

Before JLO, the same dress was worn by the designer, Donatella Versace herself. Model Amber Valletta also wore the look at the maison’s Spring/Summer 2000 presentation in Milan. Dontella credited JLO for making the dress viral and told Vogue’s 2019 Forces of Fashion conference, “I didn’t break the Internet. And Ginger Spice didn’t either, but JLo did it.”

Google was founded in 1998, but Google Images wasn't introduced to the site until July 2001. After JLO wore the Versace dress in 2000, people started searching for it on Google, but the search engine didn’t have Google Images. Revealing how JLO’s dress invented Google images, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt wrote in Project Syndicate in 2015 and stated:

Do you know the viral green dress, which JLO wore during the Grammys, was almost on the verge of not making it to the red carpet since her stylist was against it. Yes, in an interview with Vogue, JLO shared that her then-stylist, Andrea Lieberman, advised her against wearing the dress because other celebrities had done so already. But JLO was confident to pull off the look and told her stylist:

“My stylist was like, 'Please don't wear it. Somebody else has worn it.' I was like, 'Well, you bought it, and it looks the best, so I'm going to wear it.' And so I did. And it caused quite a stir.  guess every generation needs its iconic kind of Marilyn dress, and this is that dress for this generation.”

During her appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel Live, the host asked her whether she had her green dress, to which JLO replied, “I have both dresses.” Speaking to Vogue, JLO revealed that she felt empowered after wearing the green dress and revealed:

“The second time I wore it and walked out there, it was such an empowering thing. Twenty years had gone by, and I think for women, knowing you can put on a dress 20 years later—it resonated. It was like, ‘Yes, you know, life is not over at 20!’”

The scene was so spot on that it caught JLO’s attention as well. The Latin singer was blown away by the gesture, and in an interview with Extra, the 56-year-old singer stated, “I loved it. I loved it, and I thought it was really clever the way they did it." Now, because of Off Campus, a JLO trend has started where influencers are recreating the green dress look using ChatGPT. Social media pages are filled with edits from the JLO era.
