At that time, Chris' then-wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, had just filed for a divorce, and they were separated. Jennifer and Chris' relationship was a hot topic then, and every joint public appearance made headlines.
However, their whirlwind romance ended after just a year, and fans were curious why. Being respectful towards each other, both Jennifer and Chris maintained silence in that regard and remained cordial with each other. However, a couple of months after their split, a source close to the former couple told PEOPLE that there were several reasons their relationship fell apart.
As per the insider, Chris and Jennifer's relationship began on a faulty note as "Everyone jumped the gun with this romance." The source added, "It is hard for her [Jennifer] to understand the feelings between Chris and Gwyneth," who were married for about 13 years and stayed connected even after the split because of their co-parenting responsibilities for their two kids, Apple and Moses.
Jennifer Lawrence was in her twenties at that time and didn't quite understand the complex situation between 13-year-older Chris and his then-estranged wife. Another insider echoed those sentiments, saying Jennifer Lawrence left Chris because she found his dynamic with Gwyneth quite "odd."
The Hunger Games actress allegedly felt that the then-estranged spouses were "a little too close" to be just co-parents. Jennifer reportedly wasn't comfortable with their closeness even after they separated. The insider told PEOPLE:
"She broke it off with Chris. She was tired of the spotlight on their relationship, and she also thought that Chris and Gwyneth were a little too close for comfort. It was an odd situation for her."

As for Jennifer, she reportedly had fun with Chris but also took their relationship seriously. However, Chris and Gwyneth's closeness got to her. In their words:
"It was kind of serious but also not really in a sense. It was really just [Jennifer] having fun and living in the moment, enjoying time with someone she likes, but [Chris and Gwyneth's] close relationship got to her in the end, and she felt like it wasn't worth it."
The source added, “It’s too early to know what will develop in any of this," hinting that there might be more to the story than known to the public. Notably, neither Jennifer nor Chris ever shared the actual reason for their split.
