However, they were also embroiled in their fair share of controversy, with scrutiny over their Russian friend paying for part of their wedding celebrations and his ex.
Adding to the couple's list of controversies, a leaked chat of Don Jr's ex, Kimberly Guilfoyle, has surfaced. The texts created a stir online as they included sharp jabs at his current wife, Bettina Anderson. Kimberly allegedly sent the messages at a time when she and Don Jr were facing issues in their relationship, and tabloids were abuzz with rumors of his romance with Bettina.

Kimberly Guilfoyle dated Donald Trump Jr. from 2018 to late 2024, and within the two-year span, they got engaged as well. The duo seemed to hit it off at first, but they gradually grew distant. Towards the end of their relationship, Kimberly and Don Jr had strained relations. During that phase, they reportedly attended the annual Patriot's Day Freedom Fest together, where onlookers noticed their alleged awkward dynamic.
Eric Deters, a Kentucky attorney, GOP donor, and Kimberly's friend, shared the details with the Daily Mail. Eric said that the couple's dynamics seemed a little off at the September 14, 2024 fest. As per him, Don Jr refused to sit near or speak to Kimberly during car rides to and from the airport, as well as inside their VIP tent, and she drank alcohol behind his back. That led staff and guests to gossip about their alleged relationship issues.
The day after the festival, the Daily Mail published an exclusive report with photos of Don Jr canoodling with his now-wife Bettina Anderson, during an intimate brunch date. The report was accompanied by witness accounts saying that they kissed several times. Eric recalled reaching out to Kimberly at that time, texting her to check on her. However, she allegedly snapped at him, repeatedly denying any issues between her and Don Jr.
In the text exchanges, Kimberly allegedly called the reports about Don Jr and Bettina "lies" and "fake news." Kimberly added that she had lots of fun at the event and after returning home, she and Don had an "amazing" time. She addressed Bettina as Don's "ex-wife's friend"; the ex-wife likely refers to Vanessa Trump.
Kimberly then accused Bettina of being an attention-seeker and sending her own photos to media outlets to generate buzz around her. In Kimberly's words:
"I was having a f-----g time Saturday and we had a f-----g amazing time when we got home Saturday night that's a nonsense. That's his ex-wife's friend. It's all lies, but she's a cloud chasing horror that plays the story in the daily mail to get attention...Yeah, he literally sent the daily mail bikini photographs of her to try to include in the article."
Even though Kimberly didn't admit there were issues in their relationship, she and Don Jr ultimately called off their engagement and went their separate ways in 2024. Shortly after, he got together with Bettina Anderson, and they married in May 2026.
