Salim-Javed was one of the most sought-after screenwriting duo of Bollywood back in the 70s, 80s and early 90s decade of Bollywood. Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar collaborated on several iconic films, such as Sholay, Deewar, Zanjeer, Haathi Mere Saathi, Don, among so many others. Moreover, they can be credited for carving the very popular ‘Angry Young Man’ image with Amitabh Bachchan as the widely recognised face for it. Even after giving back-to-back successful films at the box-office, the duo ended their partnership in 1982. Recently, Javed talked about the reason behind his split from Salim Khan.
In an interview with Barkha Dutt for Mojo story, Javed Akhtar opened up about the reason behind his infamous split from Salim Khan, back in the 1980s. Shedding light on the matter, Javed stated that for a partnership such long as theirs, it requires equivalent mental rapport with one another, something which the duo used to have. Unfortunately, in so many films that they have delivered together, it was this rapport with one another that faded between them after some time. Expressing more about it, Javed Akhtar said:
“Partnership in a cement factory is easier, because you know what is the cost of making cement, the price in the market, and if you are decent people you can have formal relations with your partner, and the business will continue. On the contrary, partnership in writing is another ball game. You don’t have a scale or a weighing machine where you can put a scene and decide its weight, it is only a matter of feeling. You have to have tremendous mental rapport to take a scene and develop it mutually and reach the conclusion that this is the final thing and it is good. As long as you have that tremendous mental rapport you people can work together. The moment that rapport is broken or weakened, you can’t work together.”

Moving forth in the conversation, Javed Akhtar narrated how he initially developed a bond with Salim Khan, and mentioned that they occasionally used to sit by the seaside and talk about different stories and plotlines. Gradually, they became a part of each other’s life, and used to meet one another at their homes and catch up on discussions. In his words:
“When we began, both of us were nobodies, we only had each other. So, we would spend a lot of time together, sit by the sea, talk about stories. He would come to my room, I had one paying guest room, or I would go to his house, which was a small one. But when you become bigger, more successful, many more people enter your life.”
In the concluding segment of the interview, Javed Akhtar stated that he ended his equation with Salim Khan because their very rapport weakened. The former revealed that with popularity, newer friends and colleagues began to be a part of their circle, thereby fading the bond he used to have with Salim Khan. Nevertheless, he also mentioned that the two of them never had any fight over money or credits. He shared:
“We did not fight, there was no issue about credit, there was never any issue about money, there was nothing. We just grew apart. One realised that relationship is no longer there, that we now don’t sit together in the evening, we have our own set of friends. Gradually that happened and the rapport weakened, and it was reflecting on our work also.”

Well, every coin has a flip side, and it was back in an interview with Etc, wherein Salim Khan talked about the reason behind his split from Javed Akhtar. The veteran screenwriter stated that the latter abruptly shared his decision of breaking apart with him one evening, when Salim Khan visited Javed Akhtar’s home. After hearing him, Salim didn’t waste a minute and walked out.
