The incident instantly became a major topic of discussion, grabbing a permanent place in tabloid headlines. It was back in 2000, when at the Oscars, Angelina Jolie was awarded for her performance in the film Girl, Interrupted.
While Angelina was receiving the Oscar, she gave a speech wherein she expressed her love for her brother, James Haven, stating that she was in love with him. The actress then also added how he held her and told her that he loved her. Angelina could be quoted as saying:
"I’m in shock, and I’m so in love with my brother right now. He just held me and said he loved me, and I know he’s so happy for me. And, um, thank you for that."
Following the acceptance speech, Angelina Jolie and her brother, James Haven's closeness on the red carpet instantly grabbed attention. As Angelina was posing with the golden statue in her hand, James Haven accompanied her. As they stood next to each other, they shared a kiss on the lips. On the other hand, Angelina's brother, James Haven, was also asked about the same. In an interview 7 years later, James, while speaking to the Daily Mail, revealed that while he kissed his sister, it was not a French kiss or so, and was simple and lovely.

According to James, Angelina was all set to leave for Mexico for her filming with Antonio Banderas, and it was just a simple peck of love. He further added how the matter was stretched further with the photos that were clicked. James Haven could be quoted as saying:
"I did not give Angie a French kiss. It was something simple and lovely. She was about to go off to Mexico to finish filming Original Sin with Antonio Banderas. I congratulated her on the Oscar win and gave her a quick kiss on the lips. It was snapped and became a big thing."
