Nancy Guthrie Case, Expert Says Kidnapper May Again Target Savannah Guthrie’s Family, 'It Is Mean..'

Nancy Guthrie's probe has not received any breakthrough for two months. While investigators continue to struggle to find any possible leads, the case has taken an uncertain turn. On the other hand, the lack of ransom calls has given rise to fresh theories about the possible motive of Nancy Guthrie's kidnappers. Especially, experts are now discussing whether Nancy was truly the target or someone else around her. In turn, an expert believe the Guthrie family might still be under threat.

Expert hints at a threat to the Guthrie family

According to former FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit researcher, Ann Burgess, the main reason behind Nancy's abduction could be more personal than anyone thinks. Ann sat down for a conversation with NewsNation's Brain Enting Investigates and suggested that Nancy or money was possibly not the primary target of the abductors. Instead, they intended to create an emotional impact on Savannah Guthrie, her daughter. In Ann's words:

"Who in her orbit, let's call it family, could be friends, would be hurt the most [by her kidnapping]? And I think you can answer… It's a very mean, angry, horrible thing to do. And then if it goes wrong, which obviously it did, I think it doesn't make sense that she would be a target to do more than abduct her."

The expert further explained that such crimes often stem from deep personal grudges. So, she believes that the motive is more personal. Due to the same reason, the Gurthrie family might still be a target. However, the psychological nature of the incident makes it more disturbing. Ann mentioned that there is a possibility that something went wrong during the incident in reference to the blood found at the scene. She has also revealed that more than one person may be involved, which might help the investigators solve the puzzle. Sharing how more evidence can help people find answers in the case, she said:

"I think there are other small bits of evidence that could be released that people could then have more to be able to, again, hypothesize on or speculate. I think they could let more out."

Since the abduction of the 84-year-old on February 1, 2026, multiple ransom notes have emerged. According to TMZ and other outlets, these notes have demanded millions of dollars in Cryptocurrency and offered many specific details from the crime scene. A couple of them even claimed that Nancy was "safe but scared", prompting them to investigate faster.

However, subsequent communications have only deepened the mystery around the case. In April 2026, some prominent media outlets received conflicting claims. One note suggested Nancy was already dead and demanded bitcoins to provide her location. On the other hand, another note suggested that she was seen alive with her captors in Mexico. Meanwhile, the investigators have not confirmed the authenticity of either. The mix of possible credible leads and hoaxes has left the authorities struggling to find answers in the case.
