After a long run in the theatres, Peddi has finally arrived on Netflix on July 9, 2026. Featuring Ram Charan in the lead role and directed by Buchi Babu Sana, the sports action-drama was released on June 4, 2026. However, the movie landed in controversy right from the first day due to the alleged objectification of the character 'Achiyamma,' portrayed by Janhvi Kapoor.

While the movie was modified while it was running in theatres, there has been confusion regarding the OTT release. Netizens are specifically wondering if the Netflix version is an extended cut with extra footage or the edited version that was shown in theatres.

Is Peddi’s Netflix version an extended cut?

On July 4, 2026, Netflix confirmed the OTT release date of Peddi as July 9, 2026. Although people were excited to watch the film, specifically those who could not watch it on the big screen, there was a debate about whether something new would be added to the OTT version.

Notably, this was due to some social media posts that went viral a few days ago and claimed that the OTT version is going to be an extended cut, featuring deleted scenes. However, the producers of the film or Netflix did not respond to the rumours that were circulating online.

For the unversed, Peddi was edited after it received heavy backlash for the alleged objectification of Janhvi Kapoor’s character. While the original runtime was 3 hours and 9 minutes, it was reduced to 3 hours and 5 minutes after going through the edits. As of now, Netflix has listed the runtime as 3 hours and 5 minutes, which means that the OTT version is not an extended cut.

After the movie entered its third week in the theatres, the makers revealed that they are going to add an extra 5 minutes and 56 seconds of footage. Although details about the footage were not revealed, a few reports claimed that it was a replacement of the controversial scenes that were removed after criticism.

What was the controversy related to Peddi?

Released on June 4, 2026, Peddi marked the return of Ram Charan to the big screen after Game Changer, which was released in 2025. It was also Janhvi Kapoor’s second Telugu film after Devara: Part 1.

However, the film started receiving criticism from the first day, after viewers accused the makers of objectifying Janhvi Kapoor's character with excessive focus of the camera on her body. Viewers reacted by saying that the character had nothing much to contribute to the storyline and was presented on screen through inappropriate camera angles.

A debate also emerged about the portrayal of lead actresses, where the male gaze receives more preference in commercial films. A few others also addressed whether the actresses should be held responsible for such things. A particular scene also received criticism, where Ram Charan’s character was spotted kissing Janhvi Kapoor in the darkness without consent.

Around two days after the film was released, director Buchi Babu Sana shared a lengthy statement on X (formerly Twitter), on June 6, 2026. He confirmed that the controversial scenes will be edited and that every woman deserves respect and to be represented with dignity. Buchi Babu Sana wrote that cinema should entertain, inspire, and connect with viewers instead of making them feel uncomfortable. He further stated:

“I have always had immense respect for women, both on and off screen, and it was never our intention to objectify or disrespect any female character. If any part of the film has been perceived that way, we respect those sentiments, understand the concerns being raised, and sincerely apologise.”
