Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi often makes it to the headlines for his controversial statements and his personal life updates. Imran was the 22nd Prime Minister of Pakistan, who served the nation from August 2018 to April 2022. He has been married thrice, with his first wife being British screenwriter Jemima Goldsmith. The ex-couple's marriage and split are currently being revisited due to her September 2026 marriage to Irish-Australian businessman Cameron O'Reilly.

Why did Imran Khan and his ex-wife Jemima Goldsmith get divorced after nine years of marriage?

Imran Khan and Jemima Goldsmith got married in 1995. Shortly after, he transitioned from cricket to a full-time political career, launching the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. This major life change brought big responsibilities and demanded a lot of time and dedication. His grueling campaign schedules, constant travel, and other commitments left very little time for his personal life.

Imran reportedly couldn't give his then-newlywed wife, Jemima, the time she deserved. Speaking to The Times, he said that he needed to put more effort into their marriage to make it work, but his career left little room for a normal family life. According to Imran, cross-cultural marriages need more work to function properly, which was lacking on his part. He was quoted as saying:

"We had less time than a normal couple because of my work commitments. Cross-cultural marriage requires more effort."

Despite the persistent issues in their marriage, Imran Khan and Jemima Goldsmith stayed together for nine years. However, towards the end of their marriage, Imran Khan realized it was becoming unbearable for her to live like that in a foreign land. Notably, Jemima gave up on her life and career in Britain to move to India with Imran. She even reportedly converted to Islam and tried to blend into the culture of her then-husband.

Regardless, things didn't work out, and they separated. Imran mentioned that he was initially worried their split would negatively affect the upbringing of their sons, Sulaiman Isa Khan and Kasim Khan. However, he was relieved when he and Jemima worked out a proper co-parenting plan, where he would meet them during their holidays. Imran Khan's worries were then put to rest, and he was happy that their kids grew up learning about two cultures. In his words:

"When we realised Jemima couldn't live here any more, we divorced. At first we were concerned for our children. But it has worked out, and I see them during their holidays. I consider them to be lucky to be brought up with two cultures."

Jemima Goldsmith became the target of politically motivated smear campaigns, forcing her to return to the UK

Imran and Jemima ended things amicably, and there was no bad blood between them. The core issue of their relationship was Imran's growing political profile, which led to Jemima Goldsmith being the victim of a hate train by his opposition parties and politically targeted legal harassment. For instance, in 1999, Jemima was reportedly falsely accused of illegally smuggling Islamic-era antique tiles out of the country.

Though the court eventually dropped the charges, the environment became too toxic for her to live there anymore. After facing numerous uncomfortable situations like that, Imran realized that it was better for her to return to the UK and raise their sons there. Thus, despite being in love, Jemima Goldsmith and Imran Khan had to part ways in 2004, ending their nine-year marriage.
