Idina Menzel Claims Ex Taye Diggs Wanted To 'Marry Her' After He Heard Her Sing, 'He Was Like..'
Actress Idina Menzel recently opened up about how her ex-husband, Taye Diggs, said he wanted to marry her after hearing her sing for the first time on 'Rent.'

In her recent appearance during the New York City Comic Con, Idina recalled how Diggs wanted to “marry her” after hearing her sing for the first time.
Idina Menzel claims that her ex-husband joked about wanting to marry her after hearing her sing
During New York City Comic Con, Idina opened up about the origin of her role as ‘Maureen’ in Jonathan Larson’s iconic musical, including when she sang the song Take Me or Leave Me on the show. She said that the composer was super excited to play it for her. Speaking about how it felt that someone wrote it with her in mind, she said:
“One of the sweetest things about originating roles is that you get to come into rehearsal and stand at the piano, and the composer has brought in a new song and it sort of presents to you. They’re always so excited to play it for you and then give you a sheet of music, and then you’re learning it on the spot. And what a gift it feels that someone wrote this with you in mind.”
Idina claimed that they would stand at the piano and sing. Everybody on the cast was really supportive. This was especially true for her ex-husband, Taye Diggs. She said:
“So that’s what we did. We stood at the piano, and then the first time the cast heard us sing, everybody was really supportive and blown away. As my ex-husband Taye would say, because Maureen comes in the second half or at the end of the first half, there were weeks where I wasn’t called to rehearsal because they were just in a certain part.”
The actress shared that when Diggs heard her sing for the first time, he was completely blown away. He was so impressed that hearing her sing made him want to marry Idina. She recalled, “And he was like, ‘Who is this girl? Where is she? What’s this Maureen part?’ And then when I finally sang, he’s like, ‘Okay, I want to marry her.’”
For those unaware, Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs first crossed paths while working together on the original production of the Broadway musical Rent back in the mid-’90s. As their relationship developed from co-workers to lovers, the couple tied the knot in 2003 and welcomed a son named Walker. However, Idina and Diggs went their separate ways in 2014.
Idina Menzel had a ‘really hard’ time after her split from Taye Diggs
During New York Comic Con, Idina shared how things were “really hard” for her when she and Taye Diggs decided to separate. Idina claimed that working on If/Then and Frozen had essentially saved her. She said that even though her split was very complicated, working on the projects filled her heart with joy and love and forgiveness and all of that stuff. She was also happy that she got to show her son the wonderful films.
However, just as Idina’s Let It Go as ‘Elsa’ became a massive hit at the time, her ex-husband could not escape the song as it would be played wherever he went. She called Diggs a “poor guy” and added that one time when he went to the mall, he got super frustrated after hearing the song constantly playing.
