Hema Malini is undoubtedly one of the most evergreen and legendary actresses of the film industry. Popularly known as Bollywood’s ‘Dream Girl’, she mesmerises everyone with her unending beauty and grace even today. Apart from her phenomenal acting career, she has also established herself as a talented classical Kathak dancer. Moreover, she is also an active participant in the political arena, and is the elected and serving MLA from the constituency of Mathura. In her personal life, she tied the knot with legendary actor, Dharmendra, while he was still married to his first wife, Prakash Kaur. Interestingly, it was speculated that Hema and Dharmendra had converted their religion in order to get married.
In a recent interview with Lehren Retro, Hema Malini spoke about how she has been often considered and hailed as a feminist, for her decision to stay separate from her husband, Dharmendra and raise her daughters single-handedly. She highlighted that although her husband has always been there for her daughters, Esha and Ahana, but she has never felt bad about living this distanced life from him. Mentioning how such a situation happened quite automatically, she said:
“Nobody wants to be like that; it happens. Automatically, what happens, you have to accept. Otherwise nobody will feel like they want to live their life like this. Every woman wants to have a husband, children, like a normal family. But somewhere, it went out of the way… I am not feeling bad about it, or sulking about it. I am happy with myself. I have my two children, and I have brought them up very well.”

In the same interview, Hema Malini had opened up on the kind of father that her husband, Dharmendra had been for her daughters. Although she admitted that she was the one who raised them, but she emphasised how he never shied away from his duties. He was always present with them whenever needed. Moreover, she also recalled how he always used to be worried about both their daughters, Esha and Ahana getting married and settling down. In her words:
“I have my two children, they are brought up very well and he is always there. That is the best part, he is always there. Actually he was worried, shaadi hona chaiye bachchon ka. I said hoga. When the time is right, the right person will come around. With the blessings of god and guru ma, everything happened.”
In the same interview, Hema Malini also recalled a moment in her film career, when she had encountered a disgraceful remark from one of her filmmakers. She recalled the person’s deplorable demand for her to shoot a sequence in a film without pinning her saree and letting it fall down gradually.

In one of her earlier interviews with the Bombay Times, Hema Malini had labelled her marriage with Dharmendra as a rather unconventional one. Moreover, she had emphasised that if things were smooth and not something so different, then perhaps she would have never been so successful in her dynamic career.
