Hayden Panettiere was having trouble with her speech in her last public appearance before her death
According to a Page Six report, Hayden Panettiere struggled with her speech during what turned out to be her final public appearance. For the unversed, it was just months before, in May 2026, that the actress appeared for a book signing at the Harmony Gold Theater in LA. Sources revealed that the actress got emotional while discussing some painful experiences from her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. The source said:
"Her speech appeared slow and slurred at times during the book signing."
The source further shared that the organizers repeatedly reminded attendees not to record the event and later prohibited photos or videos as fans approached Hayden Panettiere during the signing. At one point, things got so out of hand when fans tried to record the actress that they had to get on a megaphone and ask the attendees to not "be rude."

Hayden Panettiere was struggling because of the medication she was on
Another source revealed that the actress had been tired because a lot was going on. They added that Hayden Panettiere was also suffering from anxiety and even took medication for it. However, as a side effect, her speech would be affected. They were quoted as saying:
"Earlier this year, she did seem a little tired at times. But she was a night owl and… she has a lot on her plate. Hayden also suffered from anxiety at times, and I know she would occasionally take medication for that. And every so often, that could impact her speech."
Hayden Panettiere was in Los Angeles to promote her memoir. The book detailed her years in Hollywood as a child star, as well as her struggle with addiction, postpartum depression, abusive relationships, and the devastating 2023 death of her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere. Despite the difficult and painful subject matter, Hayden spoke about wanting to create a positive impact on others with her book.

The actress recalled people approaching her over the years to tell her that hearing her speak publicly about her mental health had given them the courage to seek help themselves. Hayden Panettiere even got emotional while discussing sensitive topics from her past, including her childhood as a child actor. She said:
"I can hopefully leave the world a better place than I found it. I had my first identity crisis. I remember exactly where I was, standing in my bedroom at 12 years old. It's the most brutal experience, like the stark, cold room and just this row of people judging you. I wasn't checking in with myself. I'm a perfectionist. Like, I've been groomed. I'm so militant because I've been groomed from such a young age that you don't ask questions."
Hayden Panettiere died on Sunday, August 16, 2026, in Greenville, South Carolina. Her passing was confirmed by her family.
