The Gilgo Beach killings garnered a lot of attention for decades. And recently, Rex Heuermann, the man behind the Gilgo Beach serial killings, who admitted to brutally murdering eight women, received life in prison without parole. After repeatedly denying his involvement in the killings, Rex pleaded guilty to murdering seven women and admitting to killing an eighth, over a 17-year period.
The murders, which took place between 1993 and 2010, took over a decade to solve. After the sentencing, a potential victim of the murderer, Nikkie Brass, a former escort, who went on a date with him in 2015, reacted to his sentencing and revealed that he received a relatively lenient deal, even though he would spend the rest of his life behind bars. Speaking about the same, she revealed:
“I don’t think he cares a single bit about what he did. I don’t even think he’s sorry for what he did to his family.”

In her recent interview, Brass recalled her date with the Gilgo Beach serial killer, Rex. Brass revealed that she was a paid escort more than a decade ago, when she went out with a man she later identified as Rex Heuermann. Talking about the unsettling moment when she went on a date with him, Brass shared that Rex began discussing true crimes with her after learning she was interested in psychology. However, things became darker when the topic turned to the Gilgo Beach killings.

Brass recalled how Rex’s tone changed completely. He mentioned the burlap sacks in which the Gilgo Beach victims were wrapped before she asked him, “Who do you think it is, hypothetically?” Brass revealed that suddenly, the conversation felt like he was reliving those moments. Soon, she ended the date with Rex and excused herself. Speaking about her conversation with him, Brass said:
“When he asked if I knew about the Gilgo Beach killings, it completely changed — his demeanor, his excitement. It wasn’t third person anymore, it was like he was reliving what he was saying.”

The killings, known as the Gilgo Beach murders, are believed to have begun with Costilla's death in November 1993. The serial killer, Rex, targeted young female sex workers and dumped their remains on Long Island. The case came to light in 2010 when investigators found four sets of remains within a quarter mile of each other on Gilgo Beach, though many of his victims were missing for years.

Family members of the victims have alleged that police investigations were not aggressive enough because the victims were sex workers. Some Long Island residents agreed, saying they were horrified by how long it took to get justice.

Rex Heuermann wasn't linked to the case until 2022. Police investigated the deaths for over a decade but couldn’t find anything conclusive. A major break in the case came when DNA from a pizza Heuermann had eaten was matched to a male hair found with the remains, which led the officials to the killer. As per the officials, Rex “methodically blueprinted” how he selected, killed and disposed of his victims.
After initially pleading not guilty, Rex Heuermann ultimately admitted to the murders of: Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 22; and Amber Costello, 27; Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25; Jessica Taylor, 20; Valerie Mack, 24; Sandra Costilla, 28; and Karen Vergata, 34. On June 17, 2026, the judge delivered sentences of life in prison without the possibility of parole for three counts of first-degree murder and 25 years to life for each of the four other counts of second-degree murder.
