What is R Madhavan's G.D.N. about?
After the grand success of R Madhavan's 2022 film, Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, the impeccable team has come up with yet another stellar biographical drama, G.D.N. The film follows the life of the iconic Indian inventor, agriculturist and philanthropist G.D. Naidu, taking viewers through his struggles and aspirations. G.D.N. features the extraordinary life and innovations of the master inventor who established himself as "Edison of India".
The film is directed by debutant Krishnakumar Ramakumar and co-written by R. Madhavan himself, making it even more interesting for viewers. The film was released in theatres on August 7, 2026, and is now available to stream at home. The story shows his journey from being born into a family of Telugu farmers in Coimbatore in 1893 to becoming someone who has left a lasting impact on Indian technical history.
G.D. Naidu went on to invent devices that had a huge impact on the lives of the common people in the country. While the film focuses on his professional life, Naidu's personal life remains under wraps. However, the film does portray both of his wives. G.D. Naidu's wives are portrayed by Priyamani, who plays his first wife 'Chellammal', and Dushara Vijayan, who plays his second wife 'Ranganayaki'.
While we are talking about the cast of G.D.N., R Madhavan plays 'G.D. Naidu'. He is seen as an inventor during the British Raj. It is a time that shows 'Naidu's' journey as a self-taught engineer and entrepreneur in colonial-era South India. Meanwhile, Priyamani is playing the female lead, his wife, 'Chellammal'. Actor Jayaram is seen playing the role of 'Ambalapara Krishnan', a vicious, ruthless authority figure bent on destroying 'Naidu's' legacy.
The film also features Vinay Rai in the role of 'Bhupendra', an official aligned with the British, who is seen trying to sabotage 'Naidu' and tells an English official to "Soil the books". The film features Sathyaraj as 'Ramaiah Pillai', Dushara Vijayan as 'Ranganayaki', Aditi Balan as 'Padmavathi', and Karunakaran as 'Perunkili', all of whom play key roles.
R Madhavan's G.D.N. ending explained
The movie opens and loops back to the 1980s at a Tamil Nadu State Textbook Society meeting, where committee members debate whether to include G.D. Naidu, a complex, brilliant, but controversial figure, in the school curriculum. The scene mirrors the concept Madhavan followed in Rocketry. However, now, instead of 'Nambi' giving an interview, the interview begins and ends with a discussion of Naidu's legacy.
G.D.N. wants the audience to familiarise themselves with the man, the genius. However, it sometimes lacks the ability to actually make that connection. We see all these major events of his life like a choreographed slideshow: Him creating the first Indian-made motor, his collaborations with the British while also showing his patriotic dissing of their ways, his trip to Germany where he gets an award from Hitler himself, him impressing Benz, his rise creating enemies.
Despite these details, viewers struggle to understand what makes him tick or his life at length. Near the end, when a character asks Naidu why he didn't just pay the fine, he launches into a passionate speech that goes back centuries, touching on topics such as foreign invaders, indian culture and, despite all odds, a hope for tomorrow.
