One such heartbreaking moment took place during his battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) when his 13-year-old daughter helped to save him from drowning, followed by an emotional call with his estranged wife, Rebecca Gayheart. Dane died at 53 in February 2026.
Eric Dane's 13-year-old daughter saved him from drowning
Eric Dane's posthumous memoir, My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments has revealed some important moments from his battle with ALS. One such frightening incident took place during his family vacation. At the time, actor was in Antigua in 2024 when he went snorkeling with his daughter and a friend.
Suddenly, he realized that he was unable to swim properly, which left him struggling in the water. Soon, his daughter, Georgia, who was 13 at the time, realized his struggle and stepped in to rescue him with the help of one of her friends.

The two people helped bring Dane back to the boat and saved him from a potentially fatal situation. However, the incident became an emotionally painful turning point for the actor. He had to come to terms with the difficult fact that ALS had already begun to limit his physical abilities. After reaching the shore safely, Dane became emotional over the situation. Still, he encouraged Georgia and her friend to return to the water with their guide to continue enjoying the vacation.
The scary experience also made Dane make an emotional call to his estranged wife, Rebecca Gayheart. He recalled telling her, "I can't swim, Rebecca." Dane explained the incident to her as they realized how ALS was gradually taking away his physical abilities. Eventually, they both broke down in tears while processing the incident.
Although Rebecca and Dane had separated before his diagnosis, they remained close as co-parents. They shared two daughters, Billy and Georgia. In fact, Rebecca had filed for divorce in 2018. But, after Dane announced his ALS diagnosis to the public in April 2025, she withdrew the divorce petition. Rather, she and his daughters continued to support him throughout his illness.
Dane also wrote about another emotional incident involving his daughters when his condition developed. After a ballet performance by his daughter, Billie, Dane realized that he was unable to lift his arms to hug her.
Instead of getting a hug from her father, Billie knelt down and wrapped her arms around him. The moment left the father-daughter duo in tears and reflected how ALS did not just affect Dane's physical mobility, but also made it difficult for him to express his affection to his children.
For those who don't know, Dane first felt that something was wrong with him on January 7, 2024. He was unable to grip his chopsticks properly while eating sushi with his children. After months of medical investigations, he publicly shared his diagnosis in April 2025.

Since ALS is a progressive neurological disease that damages the nerve cells meant for controlling muscles, he gradually lost the ability to walk, speak, swallow, and eventually breathe. Still, the actor spent his final months raising awareness about it. He was best known for playing 'Dr. Mark Sloan' in Grey's Anatomy and 'Cal Jacobs' in Euphoria. The actor breathed his last on February 19, 2026.
Eric Dane left an emotional final message to his daughters
Before his death, Eric Dane recorded an interview for Netflix's Famous Last Words. It was intended to be released after his death. In the emotional recording, he shared some important life lessons that he wanted to share with his teen daughters, Billie and Georgia, to carry with them for the rest of their lives.
The actor encouraged his daughters to live in the present and find something that they were passionate about. He also asked them to have friends who will support irrespective of the situatiom. Dane also asked them to face life's unexpected challenges with honesty, and grace.
At the same time, the actor reminded them that they had inherited his ability to mentally cope with problems. In turn, he asked them to never give up, no matter how difficult life became. Dane ended the message with some emotional words and said:
"Billie and Georgia, you are my heart. You are my everything. Good night. I love you. Those are my last words."
