Add BollywoodShaadis on GoogleBruce Willis stepped down from acting a few years ago due to his health issues. It was later revealed by his family that the 71-year-old actor was suffering from Aphasia, which was later more firmly diagnosed as FTD. The news of Bruce’s diagnosis came as a shock to his fans, but his wife, Emma Heming Willis, stood as his pillar of strength.
Emma recalls meeting Bruce Willis while being engaged to someone else
Emma Willis recently appeared on Hoda Kotb’s Making Space podcast, where she spoke about her life with Bruce Willis. In the podcast, Emma revealed that she met the handsome actor in a gym in 2005, and in their first meeting, he left a lasting impression on her. His charismatic appearance and funny side impressed Emma, who realised that the actor was a lot interested in knowing everything about her.

When Emma met Bruce, she was already engaged to someone else. But the two only began dating when Emma’s engagement was broken. Recalling her mother’s reaction of her meeting Bruce, Emma shared:
“So when I had noticed him, I had said to my mother, ‘I met Bruce Willis, and he’s really a lovely man.’ And my mom was like, ‘What are you doing? You’re engaged to be married.’ I said, ‘No, no, no’—yes, at the time, I was engaged to be married, but I had met him, and I just noticed that. Just really loved being around him.”
Emma Heming Wills felt guilty of celebrating her birthday amid Bruce Willis's dementia
Emma turned 50 recently, but she felt guilty of celebrating her birthday amid her husband, Bruce’s frontotemporal dementia. In the same podcast, Emma revealed that she wasn’t sure about celebrating, but her friends kept pushing her to celebrate one of the biggest milestones of her life. Speaking about the same, she shared:
“I always wrestle with it, you know? I think guilt is something that I am always carrying, but I’ve learned that it is really not helpful. What I know is I always go back to what would my husband want for me?"
Bruce was first diagnosed with aphasia in 2022, and a year later, his condition advanced to FTD. His family revealed that the actor is physically strong and mobile but no longer remembers much of his acting career. He was shifted into a nearby one-story home designed specifically for his medical needs and a quieter environment. Emma discussed Bruce’s new living arrangement via the New York Post and described the choice as necessary for the family's safety and well-being.

As soon as Emma spoke about Bruce Willis’ new living arrangement, she faced immense backlash online. People accused her of being ‘cold’ towards her ailing husband and abandoning him. Many people also pointed out how the family could easily afford 24-hour nursing without shifting Bruce from his family home.
Since Bruce’s 2023 diagnosis, his loving wife, Emma, has become a vocal advocate of dementia awareness. She has an active presence on social media, where she chronicles the everyday challenges of navigating the caregiving journey. Her memoir, The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope and Yourself on the Caregiving Path, offers a raw look into her experiences.
