Dakota Johnson, daughter of actors, Donnie Wayne Johnson and Melanie Richards Griffith, had stepped into the entertainment industry with a cameo in the film, Crazy in Alabama (1999) at the mere age of 10. Dakota didn’t wanted to be an actor but was interested in modelling since the age of 12, after she had her photoshoot with other celeb kids for Teen Vogue. Dakota had also battled depression when she was 14 and was checked into rehabilitation. Dakota worked in several films but she got her breakthrough with the role of Anastasia "Ana" Steele in the erotic romantic drama film, Fifty Shades of Grey. Other than her professional work, Dakota Johnson is in the headlines for her personal life, primarily for her relationship with the Coldplay musician, Chris Martin. Reportedly, Dakota and Chris began seeing each other in 2017 and despite the constant limelight on their relationship, the couple had managed to keep it under wraps. It was in September 2018, when after a few spottings of Dakota and Chris together, she had addressed the reports and was quoted as saying by E! News, "I'm not going to talk about it, but I am very happy."
During a Tuesday appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Dakota Johnson’s actor-father, Don Johnson spoke about his daughter and recalled her reaction when she was told she’ll be cut off from family’s payroll. Don said, “The funny thing about her is—we have a rule in the family that, you know, if you stay in school, you get to stay on the payroll. So, you go to college, you get to stay on the payroll. Towards the end of high school, I went to her and I said, ‘So, do you want to go visit some colleges?’ Or something like that. And she was like, ‘Oh, no. I’m not going to college’. I went, 'OK, you know what that means? You won't be on the payroll anymore," he continued. "How you gonna manage?' She says, 'Don't you worry about it.' Three weeks later she had nailed down that part in David Fincher's The Social Network, and the rest is, shall we say, cinema history."
Don Johnson recalled this incident when he was asked if his daughter, Dakota Johnson takes career advice from him or not. Don continued, "So no, she doesn't really call me for advice. She calls me to say, 'Gosh, I would see you, but I've got three pictures that I'm shooting at the same time.'" The first part of Fifty Shades of Grey was released in 2015 and the next two parts, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed in 2017 and 2018, respectively. While everyone loved Dakota Johnson in the films, when she was asked if her father, Don Johnson had seen her steamy scenes, she answered, “No! God, no. Thank God.” In October 2018, rumours were rife that Dakota was pregnant with Chris Martin’s child. However, she had denied the speculations on an episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show and was quoted as saying, "The only thing I'm pregnant with is a lot of good ideas, but not any babies."
Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin have kept their relationship low-key and now, if the reports are to be believed, the couple has taken it to the next level and have moved in together. Reportedly, Dakota and Chris started living together in October 2020 in a $12.5 million Malibu mansion purchased by the Coldplay singer, according to People. The source had revealed, “Chris was always a big fan of Malibu. He loves the beach and often goes surfing and running.” Chris had first moved to the beachside town in 2016 after his parting ways with his ex-wife, Gwyneth Paltrow. The source had added that while Dakota has always “seemed like more of a city girl,” she's also learning to love the more laidback lifestyle of Malibu. The source had continued, “She seems to enjoy it as much as Chris does. They both love the outdoors and often take beach strolls. They also support local restaurants.”
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Gwyneth Paltrow had spoken about how she feels about her ex-husband, Chris Martin’s girlfriend, Dakota Johnson. She had said, "I love her. I can see how it would seem weird because it’s sort of unconventional. But I think, in this case, just having passed through it iteratively, I just adore her. I always start to think of the ampersand sign—what else can you bring in, instead of being resistant to or being made insecure by? There’s so much juice in leaning in to something like that."
