Dhurandhar OTT Release, Netflix Reportedly Spent Rs 130 Cr For Rights, What's The Film's Backstory?

Aditya Dhar's movie, Dhurandhar, has been grabbing attention ever since it hit the theaters. The movie features five famous actors, including Akshaye Khanna, Ranveer Singh, R. Madhavan, Sanjay Dutt, and Arjun Rampal. The movie has been dominating headlines ever since the trailer dropped, for better or worse. However, as the movie is doing well at the box office, people have been eagerly awaiting its OTT release.

While the official OTT release date for the movie hasn't been disclosed yet, a floating detail about the same is going around with the claims that the streaming giant that gained the rights to showcase the movie spent a huge budget on the deal. Let's have a look!

Netflix reportedly spent Rs. 130 crore for the streaming rights of Dhurandhar

Reports claimed that Netflix will stream Aditya Dhar's movie Dhurandhar. Reports also suggested that Netflix has spent a huge amount of Rs. 130 crore to gain the streaming rights for both parts of the movie. While Dhurandhar Part 1 was released on December 5, 2025, the second part will be released in March 2026. If the reports are accurate, Netflix has secured the streaming rights to both parts for Rs. 65 crore per part, making it the largest deal Netflix has made for Ranveer Singh's film.

When will Dhurandhar be released on Netflix?

Regarding the release date, there is no official confirmation. However, reports indicate the movie may run for 8 weeks in theatres, suggesting it may be released on Netflix on January 30, 2026. To mention, no official confirmation has been made about the same yet, and it can also happen that if the movie, which reportedly has a budget of Rs. 280 crore, continues to soar at the box-office, then the makers might decide to make it run in the theatres for long, something that also happened for another successful movie, Saiyaara. Earlier reports claimed that Dhurandhar even broke Saiyaara's Day 1 earnings record. The movie collected somewhat aroud Rs. 129.69 crore on Day 4 of its release, as per Sacnlik.

Backstory of Dhurandhar

The movie's research associate, Aditya Raj Kaul, recently revealed how the movie came to be. In a social media post, Aditya Raj Kaul revealed that he has been friends with Aditya for a long time, even before he started working on Uri: The Surgical Strike. Sharing more about the same, Aditya revealed that he got some information about the mysterious killing of a man named Zahid Akhund in Karachi from a source.

This Zahid Akhund was one of the hijackers of the IC-814 aircraft, who was killed after 23 years of hijacking. Aditya Raj Kaul mentioned that during that time, Aditya Dhar was working on his storyboard, and the duo got involved in a conversation, and one thing led to another, which led to their involvement in the movie. Sharing the story, Aditya Raj Kaul mentioned:

"In March 2022, a highly placed source tipped me off about the mysterious killing of a man named Zahid Akhund in Karachi. I was told it was a major development, but given no further details. It took me two days to establish that Zahid Akhund was, in fact, Zahoor Mistry also known as Bhola, one of the hijackers of the IC-814 aircraft. Nearly twenty-three years after the hijacking, he had been killed at point-blank range. The Pakistani ISI had instructed the local media not to report the incident. The killing itself was carried out by two bike-borne men from a local Karachi gang."
