After a tough battle with cancer, Dermot Murnaghan has bid farewell to the world at the age of 68. The news was confirmed by his family, who released an elaborate statement. Dermot had spent decades informing millions through some of Britain's biggest news stories. But in his final months, the Sky News Presenter used the public platform to ensure that others could be saved from the challenge he faced in his life. Dermot urged men to focus on their health and seek testing to avoid cancer diagnosis at later stages.

Dermot Murnaghan's final public appeal

Dermot Murnaghan announced in June 2025 that he was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer. But, instead of stepping away from the public eye, he decided to come forward and speak openly about his condition. Even during a challenging phase in his life, he encouraged others to seek treatment sooner rather than later.

Although Dermot's message might seem simple at the surface, he urged men over the age of 50, who are considered at higher risk, and anyone with symptoms to get themselves tested. He also spoke about the need for routine prostate cancer screening through the NHS, in the hope that early detection would save lives.

After his diagnosis, Dermot not only became an advocate for prostate cancer but also emphasised research. He often reminded people that prostate cancer can develop without properly visible symptoms. So, this makes it even more important to get regular check-ups.

Overall, the veteran journalist had left no stone unturned in his efforts to fight the disease both internally and externally. He even supported fundraising efforts for prostate cancer charities. In fact, his fans were moved when he spoke about the emotional impact of finding out about his advanced cancer.

But the seriousness of his illness was unable to break his determination to fight the illness. Dermot often mentioned that his disease was incurable but still treatable. This openness encouraged more discussion about men's health and inspired many to take their health more seriously.

Dermot Murnaghan's family supported him through the illness

Apart from TV, Dermot Murnaghan was a devoted family man. He had tied the knot with journalist and producer, Maria Keegan, in 1989. In turn, their marriage spanned over more than four decades. But, despite their careers in the media industry, they kept their personal lives out of the spotlight.

Dermot and Maria raised four children, Kitty, Molly, Alice and Jack. Eventually, each of them had different careers across Europe. But it did not affect their strong bond. After Dermot's death, his family shared a heartfelt statement to reveal that he died peacefully at home in North London, surrounded by his loved ones.

The family also expressed their gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and other medical staff who cared for him throughout his illness. At the same time, they continued to voice their support for his mission and asked those to wish to honour him to support different organisations. Especially Prostate Cancer UK, Prostate Cancer Research and North London Hospice for research and care.

During his final months, Dermot Murnaghan was not only fighting a serious disease, but also continued his passion for journalism. He was involved in projects such as Channel 5's Killer Britain and his Legends of News podcast, in which he interviewed fellow broadcasters. In turn, they all reflected on their decades-long career in the industry.

Meanwhile, Dermot was known for reporting on some of the most important historical moments in Britain. He announced the death of Princess Diana in 1997 and Queen Elizabeth II's death in 2022.

The veteran journalist's family confirmed that he died peacefully at home after a tough fight with prostate cancer. Meanwhile, his funeral will be a private family affair. Later, a public memorial for colleagues and friends can be held later this year at St. Bride's Church on Fleet Street.

Rest in peace, Dermot Murnaghan. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family in this difficult time.
