'DC' Movie Ending Explained, 'Devdas's' Dark Past And Tragedy That Turned Him Into A Gangster At 14

Lokesh Kanagaraj's DC is now streaming on SunNxt after making headlines with its theatrical run. Directed by Arun Matheswaran and co-starring Wamiqa Gabbi, the film is a mass-action thriller that features intense graphic violence but also has strong substance beneath the brutality. We see Lokesh in the role of 'Devdas', a gangster who believes violence is a means of delivering justice. 

However, the film gradually explores why he entered a life of crime despite his father's opposition and emphasis on education, saving the key details for the climax. Nonetheless, was the wait worth it? Let's find out.

Who is 'Devdas' and why did he join the crime world?

In the opening scenes of the film, Lokesh Kanagaraj describes his gang as rowdies, gangsters, and extremists. However, these are the labels the cops gave the gang while chasing them. While we don't know 'Devdas's' backstory or why he ended up in the crime world, the film is built in a way that we still end up rooting for him. 

The major revelation comes in the climax; we know that 'Das' lost his mother at a young age, and his father refuses to speak to him. However, what makes him real for most viewers is his longing for love. Things take a turn for 'Das' when he meets 'Parvathy', a bar singer. Nonetheless, fate once again plays its cruel game and 'Parvathy' gets killed in the crossfire when the police hunt down 'Das' and his associates.

Broken by the incident, 'Das' gets caught by the cops. However, he breaks away from custody and heads to a brothel, where he meets 'Chandra', who has been in the brothel for 18 years and has never seen the outside world. For her, 'Devdas' becomes the centre of her universe when he causes a bloodbath to free her and the other girls from the brothel. She joins him and his gang, leading us to the climax that we expected but were not really prepared for.

In the climax, we see 'Das's' father, a small-time repairman in Vellore, complaining about his son to his customer. When the customer asks why he refuses to talk to his son, the father reveals that all he wanted was for his son to study and lift them out of poverty. However, at the age of 13-14, 'Das' avenged his mother's murder after her own brothers killed her over a land dispute.

'Das's' father had apparently discouraged him from acting out of anger. He reveals that he told his son not to ruin his future and to focus on education. However, he does not listen and kills all his uncles. His father disowns him, and he is left by himself to lead a life of crime.

The truth and DC ending explained

As if we hadn't been through enough twists, the film throws another curveball: the customer, who is speaking with the father, reveals his son's true nature to him. The customer reveals that he went to 'Das' when his son was murdered by cops to steal his life earnings of Rs. 7 lakhs. He recalled how 'Das' helped him gain justice for his son, when even the law turned its back on them. They further describe how 'Das' and his gang help those who have nowhere else to go. 

This leads the father and the audience to look at 'Das's' character in a different light. The gang is described as a group of people who rise up when the police themselves commit crimes. That is why, in the beginning, we see 'Das' and his associates murder a cop who killed a poor man after robbing him of the Rs. 7 lakhs he had received from selling his property for his son's education. However, instead of a reunion, we see 'Das' and 'Chandra' drive away at the end, planning to go far away and start afresh.
