Why did Dax Shepard refuse to marry Kristen Bell?
Dax Shepard didn't want to marry Kristen Bell. The longtime couple recently sat down for a candid interview on the Armchair Expert podcast and reflected on how they got engaged. The actress revealed that Dax told her he didn't believe in marriage, and even though he explained why, she never expected an answer because she was like, 'I kind of like that tradition.'
The actress revealed that Dax Shepard told her at the time he didn't want to marry her because he felt a piece of paper would never dictate how he treats her. Kristen Bell recalled that her then-boyfriend told her he would be her partner, but not because of a document they signed at a courthouse. She was quoted as saying:
"He told me, 'A piece of paper filed at a courthouse somewhere in California is not going to dictate how I treat you. It's just not. So I'm going to treat you well and act like your partner for the rest of your life, but it has nothing to do with that piece of paper.'"
Even though Kristen Bell was more "traditional", she felt that Dax Shepard's explanation made a "pretty decent point" at the time. She shared that the actor treated her as his wife, so she was like, "who cares". For Dax, the negative perception of marriage stemmed from the fact that both he and Kristen came from broken homes. He said:
"There was some anarchist point of view of like I don't have to ask the state of California if we can be together and then ask them if we cannot be together."
How did Christmas Eve change Dax Shepard's decision to marry Kristen Bell?
In the same conversation, Dax Shepard revealed what changed his mind about tying the knot. He recalled how during a "beautiful Christmas Eve" with his family, he knew he had to put a ring on Kristen Bell's finger. The actor shared that they were in bed, and as Kristen expressed gratitude for their little family, it hit him that he wanted to marry the actress.
He recalled that a month later he was all set to get down on one knee at her favorite restaurant, but that moment felt too perfect. So, he rushed into the bedroom closet and found the engagement ring. When he got back, Kristen Bell was already in tears. He was quoted as saying:
"And I was like, 'Oh, this is the moment I'm going to try to recreate in a month at Stanley's over a salad, but it's happening.' I was like, 'F–k it, I'm just gonna go get the ring now.' She's already crying by the time I got back to the bed."
Kristen Bell also reflected on the proposal and said that when Dax Shepard got down on one knee, she broke down because she didn't think she'd get married. She revealed the moment was overwhelming for both of them. Reports say the pair began dating in 2007 and announced their engagement in 2010. They welcomed their daughter, Lincoln, in March 2013 before tying the knot at the Beverly Hills County Clerk's Office. They welcomed their second daughter, Delta, in December 2014.
