During the Today Show's broadcast on July 17, 2026, co-host Craig Melvin opened up about the security breach that occurred at the show's New York City studio the day before. Beginning his 7:30 am segment, he said he would take a quick moment to "address an incident that happened yesterday." Craig said:
“You may have heard that, unfortunately, an intruder made his way into an unauthorized area here at Studio 1A. Thankfully, he was apprehended quickly; he was placed under arrest; we are cooperating fully with NYPD as they investigate the matter; and we are just very happy that everyone is safe.”
This prompted Laura Jarrett, who was sitting next to Craig, to chime in by saying, “We want to make sure that you’re safe.” For those unaware, Laura was filling in for co-anchor Savannah Guthrie. Replying to her statement, Craig said, “Safe and sound.” To this, Laura added, “Safe and sound at all times.”

For those who don't know, it was on Thursday, July 16, 2026, that a man broke into the Rockefeller Plaza studio in New York City at about 9 am. As per reports, he confronted co-host Craig Melvin, shouting racial slurs at him. The man even asked for longtime weather anchor Al Roker after he successfully slipped past the studio’s security.
The intruder was later identified as 41-year-old Andrew Trulove. As of now, he has been charged with hate crime-burglary, hate crime-menacing, hate crime-trespass, and harassment. The same was revealed by the New York Police Department on Thursday. Reports suggest that he has still not been arraigned.
It is worth noting that just a short while before Craig Melvin addressed the security breach on air, Al Roker took to his Instagram handle to share a statement. Alongside a carousel of photos with Craig, he penned a heartfelt note, thanking all those who had checked in on his “brother” after the terrifying incident. He wrote that both of them were okay, adding:
“A really heartfelt thank you to all who reached out over the last 24 hours to check in on my brother, @craigmelvinnbc. We are both okay. It’s moments like these that serve to pull us together. You all, like Craig, said, ‘You come after one of us, you come after all of us.’ We’ll talk about it this morning on @todayshow.”
Following the incident, Craig also took to his own Instagram handle to share a short statement on July 16, 2026. In the post, he revealed that he had heard from many people over the last few hours. He assured them by stating that he was fine. Giving a glimpse of his professionalism even under such circumstances, he added, “Thanks for reaching out. I'm looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning on @todayshow.”
Netizens questioned the security of the Today Show
Despite the reassurance that came from Craig Melvin and Al Roker, netizens were still mad about how such an incident could take place and questioned the security on The Today Show. One user wrote, "So so very sad! Unbelievable that anyone would do such a thing! The people on the show are the sweetest, kindest, most genuine people ever. Glad they're all safe; security needs to do better. Omg, with everything going on with Savannah, they let someone break in? Wow. They should tighten security. People are too crazed. That person should not have gotten that far."

Another user pointed out that the security on the show should have been way better, especially after the kidnapping of Savannah’s mom, Nancy Guthrie. They wrote, "This is horrible. It’s a depressing reminder that racism can occur anywhere. I’m also shocked that an intruder could get inside the studio. You’d think security would be like Ft. Knox after what happened to Savannah’s mom in February."
