Concrete Utopia to be South Korea’s official submission for the Oscars

The Korean Film Council, on August 17, 2023, announced that Concrete Utopia had been finalised as the South Korean film that will be submitted for the 96th Academy Awards in the feature film category. As per Academy Awards rules, only one film per country is submitted in each category, and this year, Concrete Utopia has made it to the cut, defeating the film, Cobweb. The council stated that Concrete Utopia had a global impact while keeping its Korean authenticity intact, which is why it got finalised. The council further added:

“We wanted to select a film that feels Korean but is also geared towards the global standard, that strikes a good balance between artistic and mainstream, and that can appeal to the Academy Awards, which is often perceived as conservative.”

Why did Concrete Utopia get finalised for the Oscars submission?

The Korean Film Council also explained why Concrete Utopia was their final choice for the Oscars. They revealed that the movie depicts the struggles of not a hero but of ordinary people, which is very relatable. On top of that, the movie deals with topics such as natural disasters and how people strive to survive, all of the reasons combined made Concrete Utopia the best fit for Oscar's submission. The council also added:

“At a time when global recession and natural disasters are hitting every corner of the globe, ‘Concrete Utopia’ features not heroes, but ordinary people trying to survive. It touches on the themes of class found in the award-winning film ‘Parasite.'”
