Christa Pike’s case is continuing to make headlines. For those unaware, she was the only woman on Tennessee’s death row in over 200 years after the cold-blooded killing of Colleen Slemmer. After spending nearly 31 years behind bars for the crime, Christa was originally scheduled to be executed on September 30, 2026, by lethal injection.

However, the attempt went horribly wrong, and now, she has not only survived two doses of the lethal drugs but is also awake and talking. During a recent interview, a medical expert retained by Christa Pike's legal team shared more details about her condition after she woke up.

How is Christa Pike after her failed execution?

Six days after Christa Pike's execution failed and she was rushed to the hospital for life-saving care, her attorneys revealed on October 6, 2026, that she is awake and talking. They branded her recovery a “medically unprecedented” event, especially since she was given two lethal doses of pentobarbital.

Following this, in an interview with The Independent, Dr. Joel Zivot, who has been retained by the 50-year-old’s legal team, said that Christa has made some good progress to this point. However, he made a shocking revelation, stating that Christa has no memory of the execution. The professor of anesthesiology and surgery at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, said:

“I understand that she is talking and now knows where she is. She has no memory of the execution itself. It’s unclear to me whether she possesses a full cognitive recovery. It’s too soon to really say.”

According to Dr. Zivot, it could still take weeks to fully understand how much Christa will recover cognitively. She will also need time to gain back her general strength. He explained:

“As a simple rule of thumb, I tell patients that one day in bed is one week of recovery. She has no doubt generalized muscle weakness. She is still shackled to her gurney, which is what is usually done to prisoners who are in hospitals outside of a prison. Many risks remain, and she could also decline in spite of this current improved state.”

For the unversed, pentobarbital is a barbiturate that slows the activity of the brain and nervous system. It is often used by doctors to treat people who suffer from seizures and convulsions. When the drug is given in high doses, it can cause suppression of breathing, heart failure, as well as death.

Speaking with the outlet, Dr. Zivot said that he thinks Christa Pike was either given an ineffective dose of pentobarbital or an insufficient quantity. He said:

“Even with circulating pentobarbital in her body, the medical care that she received was likely able to offset the negative impacts of those drugs. Pentobarbital kills people because they are not getting medical care at the same time.”

Christa Pike's future remains uncertain

During a hearing on October 7, 2026, Christa Pike's lawyers appeared in Davidson County Chancery Court. They succeeded in convincing the judge to order the state to preserve the broadest amount of evidence possible from Christa Pike's failed execution. This will include both physical evidence such as IVs, syringes, and medical documents, and also communications and surveillance video surrounding the execution. Preserving this evidence could help Christa Pike during ongoing legal action.

Previously, Christa's attorneys had requested Tennessee Governor Bill Lee to change her death sentence to life in prison, stating that her botched execution was one of the cruelest forms of torture towards an inmate in modern times.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee also agreed that the incident was indeed “deeply disturbing.” He decided to indefinitely postpone Christa’s execution, in addition to pausing all remaining executions in the state for the remainder of 2026.

He further ordered a comprehensive, third-party independent review into the state's execution protocols. Thus, Christa Pike would remain in confinement after her release from the hospital until further notice by the court.
