The Christa Pike case continues to make headlines, especially after she managed to survive two botched execution attempts. For those unaware, she became the youngest woman in the United States to receive a death sentence at the age of 18 for the cold-blooded killing of Colleen Slemmer. After spending 31 years in prison for the crime, she was set to be executed on September 30, 2026, by two lethal injections.

However, they failed to kill Christa, and she is currently hospitalized. Amid this, it was revealed that her execution drug might have leaked into her arms and caused severe burning.

A medical expert on Christa Pike's defense team claims the execution drug might have leaked into her arms

On October 2, 2026, Christa Pike's attorneys submitted a court filing in Davidson County Chancery Court. The filing stated that as of October 1, 2026, following her failed execution attempts, Christa remained unconscious and in a critically ill condition. They added that when Christa Pike arrived at a Nashville-area hospital for treatment, her arms appeared swollen, burned, and blistered. Experts on Christa's team explained that this is because the drug, pentobarbital, was akin to “bleach” or “Drano,” and is capable of causing burns upon contact.

Dr. Joel Zivot, an Atlanta-based professor of anesthesiology and surgery who has been hired as an expert by Christa's defense team, further stated that he believes pentobarbital might have leaked from her veins and into the surrounding tissue. This was also the most likely reason behind the burns that were described by Christa's attorneys. Dr. Zivot explained:

“My opinion is that the intravenouses, that were placed in veins, that the veins ruptured, and the intravenous catheter was no longer in the vein, and when the pentobarbital was injected, instead of going into the circulation, it went into the tissue around the vein and caused burning, which that particular chemical, pentobarbital, will definitely do.”

According to Dr. Zivot, the amount of the execution drug that had entered Christa Pike's bloodstream was not enough to cause her death. He said that it was only enough to cause some alterations to her mental state and maybe her breathing pattern. In his words:

“If a person is given the quantity of pentobarbital that the state uses, and it gets into the circulation and into the brain in the, in the quote ‘right way,’ it will kill you. So the fact that she didn’t die can only mean that the pentobarbital was never in a sufficient quantity in her bloodstream to cause death.”

Dr. Zivot said that he believes the IV had become non-functional and as a result, when they tried to inject the drug into Christa Pike's veins, it did not enter her circulation but rather “leaked into the tissues where the needle was and caused this significant burning.”

What will happen to Christa Pike after her failed execution?

While Christa Pike remains hospitalized and unconscious, her attorneys requested that Tennessee Governor Bill Lee change her death sentence to life in prison. This is because the way that they tried to execute her was one of the cruelest forms of treatment toward an inmate in modern times. And if Christa Pike had to face the execution chamber again in the future after what they described as “chemical torture” and “unnecessary agony,” it would violate her constitutional right against cruel and unusual punishment.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee also agreed that the incident was indeed “deeply disturbing.” He decided to indefinitely postpone Christa’s execution, in addition to pausing all remaining executions in the state for the remainder of 2026.

He further ordered a comprehensive, third-party independent review into the state's execution protocols. Thus, Christa Pike would remain in confinement after her release from the hospital until further notice by the court.
