Christa Pike’s lawyers raised concerns that her diagnosis could affect her execution
As per the court’s latest documents, Christa Pike is suffering from a rare form of blood cancer. The documents also stated that her legal representatives warned the court that her diagnosis could affect the execution. Pike’s lawyers submitted a complaint arguing that her planned execution was a violation of the First, Eighth, and Fourteenth Amendments.
Her lawyers also argued that her diagnosis could result in ‘superadded pain, suffering, terror, and disgrace’. In the complaint submitted by Pike’s lawyers, her rare form of cancer is also mentioned, as it stated, ‘Pike’s platelet count is significantly elevated, likely due to a rare form of blood cancer called myeloproliferative disorder’.
As per Pike’s lawyers, any attempt to inject the lethal drug in her could increase her risk of developing severe pulmonary edema, a potentially dangerous buildup of fluid in the lungs. The complaint also revealed that since Pike has a number of issues with her veins, the prison medical staff use a butterfly needle to draw her blood.
All about Christa Pike’s crime and her botched execution
Christa Pike received her death sentence for the savage 1995 killing of her classmate, 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. She attacked Colleen, believing she was interested in her boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp. Due to the romantic rivalry, Pike, then 18, and her accomplices lured 19-year-old Slemmer to a secluded wooded area on the campus and murdered her.
Slemmer had over 300 lacerations on her body, strange (reportedly Satanic) symbols carved deep into her chest, and a crushed skull with a piece taken away by Pike as a souvenir. When Pike was convicted, she defended her accomplices, admitting she was the actual killer. After her arrest, officials said that Pike felt no remorse for her act, and it took her years to finally understand the gravity of what she had done.
While Pike was on death row, she received an additional 25 years to her sentence after she attempted to murder a fellow prisoner by strangling her with a shoestring in 2001. On September 30, 2026, Christa Pike’s attempted execution via lethal injection in Tennessee was botched after state officials failed to kill her with two rounds of pentobarbital. She became the first death row prisoner in history to survive a lethal injection execution.
Pike was unconscious and in critical condition for days after surviving two doses of pentobarbital. Her legal team had believed she was brain dead on 5th October and anticipated she would be removed from life support the next day. But to everyone’s surprise, Christa regained consciousness and started speaking in complete sentences. In her first public statement after the failed execution, Pike shared that she is still in pain a month after her botched execution.
