'Below' Ending Explained, The Monster Dies, But The Final Scene Hints At A Bigger Nightmare

It follows the story of 'Calvin Penney' and his family as they live on the mysterious small island named Snook Arm. Netflix's Below ending explained
Below is every Thalassophobic's worst nightmare. The six-episode series follows the story of a sea creature that has terrorized the entire community, including 'Calvin Penney's' family. Soon, he is on a mission to protect his loved ones. However, it doesn't take long before they realize that to defeat the monster, they'll need all the help they can get.
The family soon joins forces to move the iceberg that contains the sea creature's eggs. They plan to move it because the relocation efforts being pushed on their people were not just a good deed, but the 'Crocker' family corporation attempts to mine the resources on their island of Snook's Arm. It doesn't take long for things to get out of hand, and soon, the military is involved when the creature latches itself onto the iceberg in the harbor, becoming a direct danger to the residents of the island.
The military arrives with the plan to destroy the sea creature and evacuates the island, something that further benefits the 'Crockers's' plan because if the military destroys the harbor, the residents can't come back, and the family will face no resistance plundering the island for resources. However, when 'Calvin' and his family escape, they manage to dislodge the iceberg from the harbor and pull it out into deep waters.
With the immediate danger gone, the military stands down, and the sea creature is allowed to wait with her eggs, nourish them, and eventually die when they are born. As for the residents, 'Calvin' and his family decide to stay on Snook's Arm. They use whatever money they got from the ice and open a tavern, Big Squid Distillery and Brewery. Some residents who left during the evacuation are seen trying to come home, but the 'Crockers' are still adamant about making their return difficult.
Meanwhile, 'Dr. Howander' is still doing her research on the island, just with less funding. However, that is not the real cliffhanger of the series. What leaves the audience blown away is that when 'Calvin' and his son 'Wade' head out into open waters, they come across one giant iceberg like the one that caused so much death and destruction in their community; they come across multiple, and then the screen goes black.
What's next for Below? Will there be a Season 2?
The sea creature in the series is called a cephalopod or a giant squid. However, it's not like the ones talked about in history; it's far bigger, 'Cthulhu'-sized. For those who don't know, 'Cthulhu' is a fictional character and is said to be anywhere between 130-160 feet tall, whereas the ancient giant squid is said to be around 33-43 feet tall. So, when the iceberg carrying her eggs floats into warmer waters, she protects it from any threat that might come its way while also feeding to grow stronger for the eggs.
Once 'Calvin' and his family free up the eggs, the giant squid waits for the iceberg to break down and free her egg sac. She then takes the egg sac to the bottom of the ocean and protects it while they develop. As a final act, it uses its last bit of strength to eject the eggs from the sac when the time comes and dies.
From what 'Dr. Howander' explained in the final episode of Below, none of the baby giant squids survived due to the warmer waters not being a hospitable environment. The thing is, one sea creature is still unaccounted for by the end of the series. That brings us back to when the doctor realized there was something inside the ice. Dr. Howander chips away at the chunk she has and somehow finds an egg inside. When she cuts it open, the squid is still alive.
In the ensuing panic, it falls into what looks like a freezer and crawls away. The doctor then closes the lid, and that's the last we see of that baby giant squid. However, could that squid have survived and led to the new icebergs? That's a question for Season 2. However, the makers have not confirmed whether there will be another season. It is also to be noted that IMDb listed it as a "TV Mini Series", which means that there's a possibility it might not return with another season.
Nonetheless, the final decision will depend on how the series performs. So, if Below does come back with Season 2, fans can expect to see another sea creature. Another squid or something completely different? Only time will tell. The present season has set a chilling story; whether it returns or not, Netflix has definitely provided something that will leave the audience dreading yet wanting more.
