The tragic incident took place just a few days after she celebrated her 31st birthday with him during the trip, on April 5, 2026. Her family shared the news of Ashlee's demise on social media on April 12, 2026. Her close friend, Savannah Britt claimed that Joe was lying about Ashlee's cause of death being suicide. Amid that, her death report surfaced, which heightened suspicion regarding Joe.

After Ashlee Jenae's mysterious death, PEOPLE reported that the police believed she committed suicide, just as her fiance, Joe McCann mentioned. However, her friend, Savannah Britt contested the narrative and shared a broadcast by ABC News which included the death report of Ashlee Jenae. An ABC reporter shared that the influencer was admitted to not one but two hospitals and that the media outlet got hold of her death report from the second medical centre. The report listed the cause of death as "cerebral hypoxia", which is a lack of oxygen to the brain due to "strangulation and suffocation."

The medical report also included that there was "an unidentified mark around the neck" of Ashlee Jenae. The next line stated, "No any wounds seen, not pale, not jaundiced." Screenshots of those parts of the report have been going viral on social media since Savannah shared them on X (formerly Twitter). A particular part of the report that has raised eyebrows and sparked suspicion regarding Ashlee's fiancé, Joe McCann was the statement, "According to the husband he found she hanged herself on the door?????" The five question marks seemed unusual, as the ABC host also pointed out. This heightened scrutiny of Joe, who was already under fire for being the last person to see Ashlee alive.

Joe McCann reportedly told Tanzanian authorities that his fiancée, influencer, Ashlee Jenae died by suicide. According to North Unguja Regional Police Commander Benedict Mapujira, on the day of her demise, the couple had a big argument, after which they were separated into different rooms by the hotel management. After that, Joe allegedly found that she had hanged herself. Authorities suggest that she used a piece of cloth from her dress to hang herself in a wardrobe. Previously, Joe's account of Ashlee's passing didn't seem believable to her family and friends; however, local reports on April 13, 2026, suggested that the authorities ruled her cause of death as suicide. Public suspicions regarding him still didn't seem to die down.

In a statement released on April 12, 2026, they expressed their devastation and stated that they were working closely with Zanzibar officials to seek clarity. According to them, "the suddenness, the unanswered questions" made it difficult for them to come to terms with the loss. The bereaved family said:

"Nothing about this loss feels real... The suddenness, the unanswered questions, and the distance from home have made this tragedy even more overwhelming… there is an active investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ashlee's suspicious passing... we are placing our trust in the officials...we seek clarity and answers."
