Today is a day of unimaginable loss for India, as it has just lost one of its brightest stars and most legendary voices. Asha Bhosle, the playback icon whose soulful melody defined generations through her career spanning over eight decades, has passed away at the age of 92, leaving the world in a deep state of mourning. After news of her passing, her son, Anand Bhosle, released his first statement with ANI, sharing details of her final rites.
On Saturday, April 11, 2026, the veteran singer had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in South Mumbai on an emergency basis after she suffered extreme exhaustion and a chest infection, as confirmed by her granddaughter, Zanai Bhosle. Contrary to some sources that mentioned she had a cardiac arrest, she was suffering from severe respiratory and chest-related issues. She remained in the ICU, and sadly, on Sunday, April 12, her condition worsened. According to doctors, Bhosle suffered multi-organ failure shortly before her passing.

Shortly after her passing, her son, Anand Bhosle, spoke to the media and confirmed the news, also sharing details of her final journey, set to take place on Monday, April 13, 2026, at Shivaji Park, at 4:00 p.m. Anand Bhosle told NPI:
"My mother passed away today. People can pay their last respects to her at 11 am tomorrow at Casa Grande, Lower Parel, where she lived. Her last rites will be performed at 4 pm tomorrow at Shivaji Park."

Born in 1933 in Maharashtra into the iconic Mangeshkar family, Asha Bhosle began her musical journey at a young age and went on to become one of the most versatile voices in Indian cinema. Following the passing of the “Nightingale of India,” Lata Mangeshkar in 2022 at 92, Asha’s demise at the same age marks the loss of two timeless legends, leaving an irreplaceable void in the Indian music industry.

Asha ji's range was unmatched. From soulful ghazals like Dil Cheez Kya Hai to energetic cabaret numbers like Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja and Chura Liya Hai Tumne, her versatility has left generations of musicians in awe. Her most memorable music came from collaborations with legendary composers, including O. P. Nayyar and her husband, R. D. Burman.
Bhosle's masterful ability to continuously reinvent herself with changing times kept her relevant across generations, even collaborating with A. R. Rehman later on. In her musical career spanning over eight decades, Asha ji has gifted thousands of songs across multiple languages. Her adaptability and openness to new sounds remained unchanged even in her 90s.
Asha Bhosle’s contributions were recognised with some of India’s highest honours, including the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan. She also won multiple National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards, reflecting her enduring impact on Indian music. Just weeks before her tragic passing, she had collaborated with British virtual band Gorillaz on the track 'The Shadowy Light', released on their ninth studio album, The Mountain (Parvat), on February 27, 2026. She had also been collaborating with Adnan Sami for an upcoming project, though it's not confirmed whether that was completed.
