Ann Widdecombe was a romantic at heart who had experienced true love once, as she said, but it did not last. She was single at the time of her death. In her fifties, Ann sat down for an interview with the BBC and shared insights into her first and last love, Colin Maltby. He was Ann's boyfriend at university, and she was deeply in love with him. However, after their split, she never dated again.
Ann further clarified that her relationship status was not a deliberate lifestyle choice or a rejection of marriage, as popular notion suggests. Calling it a myth, she stated:
"I think there is this myth that anybody who's single has taken this decision. Well, one or two people might have done, but I certainly never did."
Revealing the reason for her singlehood, Ann Widdecombe shared that she didn't feel the kind of connection she had with Colin with anybody else. She didn't believe she "consciously abandoned" the prospect of a romantic relationship or marriage. Instead, it's just that nobody ever interested her enough to date them. Ann even mentioned thinking that she would definitely find someone better than Colin, fall in love and get married. However, as she aged, her delusion was broken. In her words:
"When the relationship with Colin was over, my underlying assumption was somebody else was going to come along, that I was going to get married. I'm not sure that I ever consciously abandoned that...[But] I never fell in love again."
Once Ann reached her 40s, she realised she had no luck in love and began to enjoy her own company more. She recalled feeling that she was meant for singlehood. By her 50s, Ann was convinced that dating was not for her and that single life suited her best. She realised she preferred singlehood over commitment and stated:
"[By mid-40s] it felt quite nice being on my own. By my 50s, I was saying, 'oh yes, I prefer this.' Now I can tell you if Mr Right came in, I'd repel all borders."
