Iconic Punjabi singer, Amar Singh Chamkila and his wife, Amarjot Kaur’s life and works have recently been cinematographed in the form of a biopic by Imtiaz Ali. The film, Amar Singh Chamkila, helmed by Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in the titular roles has already been an instant hit, since its release on Netflix last week. While the tragic life of the singer husband and wife duo has been narrated in its most real detail, it is now that the surviving family members of Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjot Kaur who have come out in public and lent their support to the biopic.
On the premiere night of the film, Amar Singh Chamkila, Diljit Dosanjh, Parineeti Chopra and Imtiaz Ali witnessed the real-life surviving family of the iconic singer, Amar Singh Chamkila showcase their love and support to the same. In a glimpse of the heartwarming response shared by Diljit, one can spot the first wife of the real singer, Gurmail Kaur make her first public appearance. Clad in a white salwar kameez, she warmly embraced Diljit Dosanjh in a warm hug. For the unversed, before his marriage to Amarjot Kaur, Amar Singh Chamkila was married to Gurmail Kaur and the duo is blessed with two daughters.

While the world has come to know about the life and love story of Amar Singh Chamkila and his wife, Amarjot Kaur, seldom do people know that the former was also married previously to Gurmail Kaur. Interestingly, Amar Singh fell in love with Amarjot while he was still married and a father to their daughters, Amandeep and Kamaldeep. According a report by The Statesman, the singer never divorced his first wife and got married for a second time. In fact, after Amar Singh Chamkila’s assassination by unnamed killers, Gurmail Kaur was said to have a major breakdown, and her health suffered a lot.
It was back on March 8, 1988, when Amar Singh Chamkila and his wife, Amarjot Kaur were all set to perform in Mehsampur, Punjab. The couple were gunned down by a gang of unknown motorcyclists, as they exited the venue at 2 AM in the night. At that time, Amarjot was said to be pregnant and the attack also wounded several other members of the couple’s entourage. Unfortunately, the mystery of the couple’s assassination still remains unresolved.

Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjot Kaur was blessed with a son, Jaiman. In an interview with The Times Of India, he talked about the possible reasons behind the assassination of his parents and remarked how there was a time when his father used to get a lot of threats, in the form of letters. Nevertheless, Jaiman revealed that his parents’ show would remain unaffected, since a large number of people used to gather. Sharing the possible reasons why Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjot Kaur got gunned down, Jaiman said:
“There were artists at that time who would feel jealous that father came 15 years after that. Still no one could sing like him and they could not write like him."
