Amar Singh Chamkila has been in the headlines ever since Imtiaz Ali released a biopic based on the singer’s life, starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra. Several unheard anecdotes about Amar's life and death have surfaced online, and fans are rediscovering his songs. Amar Singh got married twice, and as per the film, Amarjot was unaware that Chamkila was an already married man and even Gurmail had no idea of her husband's brewing romance until after he got remarried.
In an interview with the YouTube channel, Love Punjab, Amar Singh Chamkila’s first wife, Gurmail Kaur, spoke about the former's second wife, Amarjot Kaur. Gurmail revealed that she had met Amarjot, a few times before the latter's untimely death and even hosted her at their home. She further added that she would make rotis for Amarjot as the latter didn't know how to do it and said:
“Chamkila would visit alone and not bring Amarjot along. But she did visit me sometimes. I would make rotis, she would make the vegetables. She didn’t know how to make rotis, they had a cook.”

For the uninitiated, Amar Singh Chamkila fell in love with Amarjot Kaur while he was still married to Gurmail Kaur and was a father to their daughters, Amandeep and Kamaldeep. Moreover, a report by The Statesman revealed that the late singer never divorced his first wife and got married for the second time. Reflecting on her bond with Amarjot, Gurmail added in Punjabi:
“I would respect her because of Amar Singh Chamkila.”
Speaking about Amar Singh Chamkila's death and the aftermath that followed, Gurmail Kaur revealed that her family faced a financial crisis. She further added that she was caught up in court cases, which went on for 15 years while bringing up the children. Moreover, Gurmail also revealed that she had to look after Chamkila's uncle, who was mentally unstable after the singer's death. In her words:
“The light of our house died. We had no one to financially support us. The children were small, where could I have gone? The money that he earned, we didn’t get any money because of the court cases that opened after his death. Cases went on for 15 years. I was handling court cases and the kids, and took on the responsibility of Chamkila’s uncle. He was not mentally stable and often believed that Chamkila and Amarjot were alive.”

On the premiere night of the film, Amar Singh Chamkila, the late singer, Amar Singh Chamkila's family joined Diljit Dosanjh, Parineeti Chopra and Imtiaz Ali and showered their love and support for the movie. In a video doing rounds on the internet, we could spot the real singer's first wife, Gurmail Kaur, making her first public appearance. She was dressed in a white salwar kameez and was seen embracing Diljit Dosanjh in a warm hug.
