On the occasion of Independence Day, actor Akshay Kumar shared the happiest news of his life as the actor got his Indian citizenship. Akshay, who has often faced criticism over his Canadian citizenship renounced his Canadian passport. The actor shared the news of his Indian citizenship with his fans through his social media handles.
Taking to his IG handle, Akshay posted a picture of a document with his name as Akshay Hariom Bhatia. Along with the picture, the Hera Pheri actor penned a note of gratitude which can be read as:
“Dil aur citizenship, dono Hindustani. Happy Independence Day! Jai Hind."
In the 90s, when Akshay faced a lull in his career after 15 consecutive flops. The actor, who was dejected by the failure applied for Canadian citizenship. The actor did not cast his vote in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and faced a lot of criticism over the same. In 2019, Akshay promised to apply for an Indian passport.
Speaking at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit, Akshay addressed the debate over his Canadian citizenship and said:
“Having a Canadian passport does not mean I am any less of an Indian. I am very much Indian. I have been here since last nine years when I got the passport. And I don't want to get into the reason of why, what happened, my films were not working, blah blah blah, chalo woh theek hai.”
At the same summit, Akshay also revealed the delay in his Indian passport and blamed the pandemic for the same. In his words:
“Yes, I had said it in 2019, I applied for it. Then uske baad pandemic aagaya. Uske 2-2.5 saal sab kuch band hogaya. Renounce ka abhi mera letter aagaya hai and very soon my whole passport will be coming. Main kya karu, maine thodi pandemic laya hai.”

The handsome actor’s latest released film, OMG 2 is garnering a lot of positive reviews at the box office. Apart from OMG 2, Akshay Kumar will also be seen in the action thriller, Bade Miya Chote Miyan and in the fifth instalment of the hit comedy film, Housefull.
