Vijeta's dad is a retired Wing Commander while her mother is a dietician. Due to the nature of her father's job, the family had to move a lot and after his retirement, they settled in Nagpur from where Vijeta obtained her MS (General) in November 2002.
The Dravids and the Pendharkars have known each other for over 35 years. Pendharkar stayed in Bangalore between 1968 and 1971, and that is when the friendship began. Later, Rahul's father, Sharad worked in Nagpur for a while.
The young Rahul and Vijeta became good friends during this time. Vijeta's friends always thought that Rahul had a liking for Vijeta as he would visit her in Nagpur whenever he had a chance.
Their parents understood what their children wanted and took no time to fix a wedding date for them. It was a love-cum-arranged marriage and a rather beautiful one.
Though Rahul Dravid lived in the spotlight, Vijeta was oblivious to it. She did not have much knowledge about the game. When the media got to know about the upcoming nuptials, they started digging up Vijeta's life, which alarmed her and her family.
Since Vijeta has always lived a simple life, it took her a while to adjust to the limelight that was to become a part of her life if she were to marry Rahul.
Jayshree, Vijeta's concerned mother, said:
"We don't want to gain too much publicity. I am not sure Rahul's family, especially Vijeta's mother-in-law, would approve."
Rahul and Vijeta's parents fixed their match in 2002, but since the Cricket World Cup was due in 2003 and Rahul had to practice, the families decided to wait for the nuptials until the World Cup is over. But, the two got engaged before the series began and Vijeta even flew to South Africa to see her fiancé play.
May 4, 2003, was fixed as the wedding date. It was a traditional Maharashtrian wedding that took place at the Border Security Force (BSF) Training Centre, on the outskirts of Bangalore. The bride and the groom donned traditional Marathi attires. The nuptials began at 9.30 am and ended at 3 pm. A lavish lunch was organised for the guests at a five-star hotel which also served as the venue for their reception.
It was a very guarded affair where no media personnel was allowed. The families booked around 70 rooms for the guests. The security was at the peak. Dravid invited his old buddies, Anil Kumble and Venkatesh Prasad, and they were the only cricketers in attendance.
At the reception, the newlyweds finally posed for the media and Rahul thanked them for understanding their need for the privacy.
The families were ecstatic and Jayshree said:
"Rahul is a thorough gentleman. Who wouldn't want to have him as his son-in-law?"
The couple welcomed their first son, Samit in 2005, and their second son, Anvay in 2009. Both the boys could be seen with Rahul and Vijeta on various occasions.
You can often catch the happy family humbly flying in the economy class like ordinary people.
