A father’s relationship with his kids can empower them and make them take the right decisions. A father doesn’t teach his kids life lessons directly but, he will live his life and let his kids learn from the experiences that he faced. A mother always protects her kids and guides them in life's lessons, but a father will guide them on every possible factor of life, he will keep his emotions aside and sometimes will take harsh decisions to protect his kids. In Bollywood, we have seen a continuous debate on the matter that has been trending nowadays, Nepotism. Star kids making their way in Bollywood through the references of their star-parents and grabbing the big banner films.
But it is not always the case, as there are star-parents, who never interferes in the professional decisions of their kids. They will guide and support their kid’s decision and will not help them because they are born in a family of stars. The same is the case with Bollywood’s Mr Perfectionist, Aamir Khan, who has always stated that his kids, Ira Khan and Junaid Khan (From his first wife, Reema Dutta) will have to make their own way in the professional field and he will only guide them. As per Aamir, his kids will have to showcase their talent and learn from the mistakes and then make their name in the industry and not because they are his kids.
Aamir Khan’s daughter, Ira Khan is making her way in the field of direction and has recently made her directorial debut with a play, a Greek tragedy titled, ‘Euripides’ Medea’. While his son, Junaid Khan made his acting debut with theatre without the help of his father. In an interview with the Hindustan Times, Aamir revealed that he is so glad that his kids are following what they want to do and what’s important is that they are doing it on their own and are not taking his help in anything.
During the same interview, when Aamir was asked what all they have learned from him, he replied, “I have no idea what they’ve taken from me; that you’ve to ask them. But what I can say is that they’re doing things entirely on their own, which is good because I think that’s how it should be. Ira had told me (about the play), but she had not asked me for any help, nor did she say, ‘Dad, please guide me’. Junaid is acting in theatre and he’s also on his own. So, both are doing what they feel like doing.”
Aamir Khan further added that everything makes him nervous as a parent when he goes to watch the work of his kids. He said, “So, when I go to see Junaid’s play, I’m like, ‘I hope he has done well’. And now that Ira is directing a play, I hope she does well. I’m nervous for her. It’s a natural parental response hoping that your child has done well. But I guess that there’s no escape from that nervousness.”
Talking about the constant debate about nepotism, Aamir added that it is entirely his kid’s decision whether they want to enter Bollywood and if so then they have to make their own way. He further added that he won’t ever be dishonest to himself and his craft for his kids.
Aamir Khan concluded by sharing his criterion of casting for his film and said, “For me, not just them, to cast anyone in a film, the main criterion is ‘Are you appropriate for that film?’ If you’re not, it doesn’t matter whether you’re my relative or my child. I can’t be dishonest to what I believe in creatively. So, if I do cast Junaid, it’ll be because I feel he’s right for the role. And if it ever happens that I produce a film that Ira wants to direct, it would be because she’s right for the film, not because she’s my daughter.”
In a press conference on the occasion of his birthday (March 14, 2019), Aamir Khan had talked about launching his son, Junaid Khan. He had shared, “I think it's up to him. He should lean his own life and make his own decisions. He is inclined to the creative side, he is doing theatre. He is very bright but I am allowing him to follow his own path.” He had also talked about casting Junaid in a remake and had stated, “I don't want to do a remake.. but in case we see a film that can be remade and he is appropriate for the role then you never know."
Aamir Khan had appeared on Karan Johar’s show, Koffee with Karan and had opened up about his son, Junaid and his ambition to pursue a career in films. Speaking about the same, Aamir had revealed that Junaid wants to act, and also wishes to make films. Aamir had said that he has warned him as there are bound to be comparisons as he happens to be his son and that it would be tougher for him. Aamir had concluded by talking about how he would deal with Junaid if he found that he wasn’t ready for acting, and had stated that although he has asked Junaid to follow his art, he will always tell him on his face when he is not ready for it. Because if he doesn’t do that it would be unfair to the film and to the audience.
Aamir Khan is undoubtedly Mr Perfectionist of Bollywood, who never compromises on his art!
