Several news platforms recently confirmed the passing of sports legend, PT Usha's husband, V Srinivasan. As his loved ones mourn his loss, let's look back on his journey.
The husband of Indian sports legend PT Usha, V Srinivasan, passed away early morning on January 30, 2026. According to reports by news agency PTI, the latter took his last breath on Friday at his residence in Kerala's Kozhikode district, after a sudden medical emergency. We all know PT Usha for her contribution towards the sports world. She is also the president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and a Rajya Sabha MP.
However, did you know that her husband, V Srinivasan, was also a sports gem? The former kabaddi player passed away in the early hours of Friday, according to family sources. He was 67 at the time of his demise. According to reports, even Prime Minister, Narendra Modi called PT Usha to express his condolences at the heartbreaking loss.
According to family sources, V Srinivasan felt uneasy around midnight at his home in Payyoli, located in the Kozhikode district in Kerala. He collapsed soon after and was rushed to a nearby private hospital. Unfortunately, doctors declared him dead on arrival. The unexpected loss has left the sports and political world grief-stricken. What's further heartbreaking is that PT Usha was not at home at the time of the incident. As per reports, the sports legend was on her way home after attending the parliamentary session.
While we all know that PT Usha is one of India's most successful track-and-field athletes, with four gold medals and seven silver medals at the Asian Games, not many are aware of her husband, V Srinivasan's achievements and contributions towards the country. According to reports, Srinivasan was a former central government employee and a constant presence by Usha's side throughout her illustrious sporting and political career. According to a DNA report, V Srinivasan, who hailed from Ponnani in Malappuram district in Kerala, was involved in sports for a long time.
The government employee wasn't just supportive of his wife's career in sports, but also had a close history with sports himself. As per reports, Srinivasan was a former kabaddi player who also served as an officer in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). Despite his achievements in sports and his professional career, he chose to stay out of the limelight, quietly supporting PT Usha throughout her athletic career and later in her roles in public life and sports administration.
According to reports, PT Usha and V Srinivasan were distant relatives who married in 1991. While little is known about their personal lives, the couple has a son, Ujjwal Vighnesh, who is a doctor. Srinivasan was widely regarded as her pillar of support and the driving force behind many of her professional milestones. Many of the couple's close associates described him as disciplined, soft-spoken, and deeply committed to the values of sport and service to society, as per reports.
Prime Minister, Narendra Modi also extended his condolences to Rajya Sabha MP and President of the Indian Olympic Association, PT Usha, on Friday. He called the sports legend and expressed his grief at the passing of her husband, V. Srinivasan. Many other political figures have reached out to Usha and even taken to social media to express their grief. Kerala Governor, Shri Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, also expressed profound grief over the demise of V Srinivasan. A tweet by Kerala Governor read:
"Hon'ble Governor Shri Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar expresses profound grief over the demise of Shri V. Sreenivasan, husband of Rajya Sabha MP and President of the Indian Olympic Association, Dr P. T. Usha. Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. May his soul attain mukti."
