The devastating news of her death was confirmed by Louise’s friend, Susan Charlotte. Louise was widely known for her role in the 1970s sitcom, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.
Louise's career took off in 1962 when she made her Broadway debut in the musical, I Can Get It for You Wholesale. Coming to her personal life, Louise was married to Woody Allen from 1966 to 1970. Now, if you are interested in knowing more about Louise’s ex-husband, Woody Allen, we’ve got you covered.
Woody Allen was born as Allan Stewart Konigsberg on December 1, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, to Martin Konigsberg and Nettie Konigsberg. He attended New York University and City College of New York. When he was 17, Woody legally changed his name to Heywood Allen. He has worked as a comedy writer, stand-up comedian, screenwriter, actor, playwright, musician and director.
Woody is well known for his comic timing and has starred in different genre projects, including Interiors, Match Point and Everyone Says I Love You. Coming to his personal life, Woody married thrice. Woody first tied the knot with Harlene Rosen in 1956 and got a divorce in 1962. Then he went on to marry Louise Lasser in 1966. After his divorce from Louise, Woody found love in Soon-Yi Previn and has been married to her since December 1997.
Louise Lasser met Woody Allen when she was just 20 or 21. At the time, she had just started therapy as she was depressed. When the former pair met, Louise was dating a friend of Woody's, and Woody was married to Harlene. But instead of talking to their respective partners, Louise and Woody spoke to each other and felt an instant connection. In a 2013 interview with The Toast, Louise said:
"I'm 21 years old, or 20, I'd just started therapy, and I don't know who I am or what's important. I was just a young actress, living with my parents, just started therapy. And was probably pretty depressed in my life by then. So, I met him, and it was so clear the whole night the four of us were there, and neither of us was talking to anyone else, do you know what I mean? We know what's going on, and it's like you feel nervous about it because it's like you can get into trouble for this."
Eventually, Louise and Woody’s bonding developed, and he got divorced from Harlene. In 1966, the couple got married, and during this time, Woody’s career in the film industry was starting to take off. However, instead of feeling overshadowed, Louise admired his talent and felt inspired by his work. During their marriage, Louise’s parents got divorced, and later, her mom died by suicide. In an interview with Interview Magazine, Louise said:
"I love his work. That relationship was a very influential relationship, on every level. It's interesting to see that. I'll forever be influenced by his work. A lot of my best work comes from his work. Some meaning and some not even meaning to."
The couple parted ways in 1970. However, their relationship didn’t end immediately after they got divorced. They stayed close friends for a while, and slowly their romantic relationship faded away. Even after their divorce, the former pair continued to work on the same projects. Woody cast Louise in several of his movies, including Take the Money and Run, Bananas, and Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex, showing that they still respected each other.
Rest in peace, Louise Lasser.
