Before her union with Howard, Nancy already tread the path of marriage with her ex, John Philip Kassebaum. Even after Nancy's split with her first husband, she carried his surname. The former couple were college sweethearts who met at the University of Michigan. At that time, Nancy was studying for her master's degree in diplomatic history, and John was studying law.
Nancy and John got married on November 8, 1955, at her family home in Topeka, Kansas, and they went on to become parents of four children, John, Linda, Richard, and William. As for John's professional life, he built a successful career as a Wichita attorney and businessman. During their marriage, Nancy was involved in the Maize school board and had not yet entered US politics. After two decades of marriage, the couple separated in 1975.
Nancy then moved to Washington D.C., to work as a Senate aide, and after a few years, her divorce from John was finalized in 1978. Almost two decades later, she found love again in Howard Baker and got remarried.
