Poonam Dhillon has recently been taken to the hospital following a dengue diagnosis. Journalist Vickey Lalwani was the first to break the report, saying that Poonam has been hospitalised for a few days. Vickey even shared an update on her health, saying she is slowly recovering.

While further updates are awaited, Poonam’s journey in the film industry along with her personal life once again made headlines. While the 64-year-old is a mother of two children, she was once married to Ashok Thakeria, the well-known film producer.

Poonam Dhillon and Ashok Thakeria first met at a Holi party

Poonam Dhillon first met Ashok Thakeria in 1988 through filmmaker Umesh Mehra, a common friend. At the time, Poonam had lost her father and had decided to skip Holi. Umesh invited her to his farmhouse in Khandala for the festivities. She initially turned down the invitation, but later agreed as she shared a close friendship with Umesh and his wife Ritu.

Ashok was present at the celebration and was immediately drawn to her. He is said to have asked Ritu why Poonam was staying away from the celebrations, and when Ritu told him about her father's death, he tried to cheer her up by playfully pouring a bucket of water on her. That was their first interaction.

While Poonam Dhillon did not know Ashok Thakeria at the time, she found his gesture warm and caring. The two then spent time conversing at the Holi party. After returning to Mumbai, Poonam reportedly started receiving flowers from Ashok almost daily until she agreed to marry him. She accepted the proposal and even chose to step away from films to focus on her married life.

In the beginning, their marriage appeared to be going well. Poonam stayed at home while Ashok focused on his work and growing his production business. She later welcomed her first child, Anmol, and embraced motherhood happily. According to sources, her sister and other family members suggested she keep herself engaged with some work. Still Poonam was content being a mother and soon had her second child, Paloma.

Poonam Dhillon and Ashok Thakeria reportedly had arguments before their split

The initial years were smooth, but over time, Poonam Dhillon started feeling restless doing nothing. She then decided to take up television and worked on a show titled Andaaz, produced by Himesh Reshammiya, which required her to shoot for only five days a month. However, these were temporary fixes, as differences began to surface in Poonam and Ashok's marriage. Over time, their incompatibility grew, leading to frequent arguments.

In October 1997, Poonam left Ashok's house and moved in with her sister. As per reports, the main reason for the drift was that Poonam felt the passion had faded from their relationship. She reportedly felt that Ashok was not giving her enough time, with even his Sundays dedicated to their son Anmol. She was heard telling a friend that she no longer felt the same connection with him.

A friend of the actress recalled that Poonam had begun to feel uncared for. Many of their friends were surprised by the split, as there were no major reasons behind it. Poonam was clear about wanting a divorce and consulted lawyers to begin the process. The two eventually parted ways legally in 1997.

Ashok Thakeria is a film producer active in Hindi cinema since 1985. He began his career as the co-founder of the production banner Maruti International with director Indra Kumar in 1983. His first film as a producer was Mohabbat, released in 1985. He then produced Kasam, released in 1988.
