Riniki Bhuyan Sarma was born on July 31, 1973, in Guwahati. She is the daughter of the late Jadav Chandra Bhuyan, a renowned industrialist. Riniki completed her schooling at St. Mary School. Later, she went on to pursue her graduation and post-graduation from Cotton College, Guwahati. Riniki then pursued LLB. Currently, she is enrolled in the Bar Council of India. Riniki is a former national-level tennis player who represented Assam in national championships. According to multiple reports, as of March 2026, Riniki has a whopping net worth of approximately Rs. 32.79 million.
Riniki Bhuyan Sarma and Himanta Biswa Sarma first crossed paths during their college days. At the time, Riniki was pursuing graduation at Cotton College, Guwahati and Himanta was the General Secretary of the college. Back then, Riniki was 17, and Himanta was 22. After 10 years of courtship, Riniki and Himanta got married in 2001. They are parents to two children, a son, Nandil Biswa Sarma, and a daughter, Sukanya Sarma.
Himanta Biswa Sarma dreamed of becoming Assam’s CM one day. He shared this dream of his with his now-wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, during their college days. In 2021, after Himanta succeeded Sarbananda Sonowal as the 15th CM of Assam and took the oath of office on 10 May 2021, Riniki told the media that when Himanta was the General Secretary of Guwahati’s Cotton College, he had told her that one day he would be the CM of Assam. She also shared a rare glimpse into their love story. Riniki was quoted as saying:
"He told me, 'Tell your mother, I will be the chief minister of Assam one day.' He was very sure what he wanted to do in the future. What he told me at the age of 22 has now come true. On May 9, 2021, he returned home and just said designated chief minister. I just looked at him and asked who? He said, 'Me'. We got married when he was an MLA and then he became a minister. I have seen how he has managed all situations. Now, he has taken the oath as the chief minister of Assam. But I will need a few more days to realise it."
Earlier, this year, in April 2026, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma was accused of possessing three foreign passports by the Congress. For the uninitiated, the Congress during a press conference on April 5, 2026, claimed that the Assam CM’s wife, Riniki, holds passports of Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Antigua-Barbuda. Speaking to the media, Riniki shared that all the allegations are baseless and fake. She mentioned that the passports shown by Congress leader, Pawan Khera, are completely AI-generated. She has also taken legal action and filed an FIR against the Congress. She urged the Assam Police to get in touch with the MEA and prove everything related to the case. According to TOI, Riniki was quoted as saying:
"All the allegations are baseless and false. Therefore, I have lodged the complaint seeking a proper investigation into the matter so that the guilty are punished. The passports with my name that they showed during the press conference are completely Al generated and completely photoshopped. It is a clear violation of personal rights."
