Susan Luci recently shared how she grieved the death of her husband, Helmut Huber, in 2022.
Susan Luci's personal life was steadier than any soap-opera plot she ever portrayed. When millions of fans watched her portray the dramatic and evolving ‘Erica Kane’ on All My Children, Susan's real-life love story with her husband, Helmut Huber, quietly took shape behind the scenes. The couple were married for nearly 52 years, sharing the “love of a lifetime”. But Helmut's demise in 2022 marked the end of their togetherness. Recently, Susan opened up about how she felt lost after losing him and how she still deals with it.
Helmut Huber was born in Austria and went on to build a multifaceted career spanning culinary arts and television production. He was a classically trained chef with a strong focus on European cuisine. Helmut worked as an executive chef before he transitioned into television production and management. Over time, he became Susan's manager and the CEO of Pine Valley Productions, guiding her iconic career during her 41-year run on All My Children.
Additionally, Helmut was a vibrant personality, and Susan discussed with People about his great sense of humor, a love for fast cars, skiing, golf, and cooking. He affectionately called her “Susie,” and she acknowledged how his presence filled every corner of her life. However, a turning point in the relationship came on March 28, 2022, when Helmut passed away at the age of 84, one month after suffering a stroke.
Susan Luci and Helmut Huber first met in the summer of 1965 at the Garden City Hotel on Long Island. She was an 18-year-old college student working as a waitress, while he was the 28-year-old executive chef. At the time, Susan did not view him as a romantic prospect and had already become engaged to someone else. But destiny had its own plans since Helmut told Susan's mother in 1968 that the boy was not fit for her.
Later, it turned out to be true, and Susan ended her relationship before she began dating Helmut. They got engaged within 3 months of dating and married on September 13, 1969. Together, they raised a daughter, Liza, a former actress, and a son, Andreas, a professional golfer, and welcomed 6 grandchildren. Helmut was famously by Susan's side through her long run of Emmy losses and celebrated with her when she finally won in 1999 after 18 nominations.
Susan Lucci opened up about her upcoming memoir in a recent interview and recalled how she misses everything about him. She stated, “ I miss his presence, miss sharing things, like coffee in the morning.” The actress revealed that she still sometimes sets out two coffee cups, a quiet tribute to their daily ritual. Helmut's favorite phrase, which which he often said with his Austrian accent, was, “After the rain, the sun shines,,” and these words continue to comfort her in difficult times now. Susan, who is approaching 80, admitted she is now focusing on joy with her family, work, travel, and friends, especially grandchildren. But through it all, the memory of Helmut Huber remains her guiding light.
Rest in peace, Helmut Huber
